We were in London last weekend and bumped into, unbelievably, Richard E Grant

The reason the research is poor, of course, is because the reviewers write up their findings *after* finding a pub that sells pints for £3.99. See also walking guides that feature a pub lunch. The routes get noticeably confused in the latter half

Yes that, and also: We the viewers (vaguely sort of think that we) know who the players are and what they're like and (believe that we) know when they're behaving out of character or suspiciously

I often wondered why Conan Doyle used a real London address for Sherlock Holmes - wasn’t that going to annoy someone? - but I recently found out that Baker Street at the time didn’t go up as far as 221, so it was a safe “fake address”.

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

 fipindustries on tumblr:

I cannot stand the parodies of modern major general,
they're overdone and simply not as good as the original.
They've done them about everything, whatever topic, big or small.
And when i notice one of them my eyes will always start to roll.

The diction’s always slurry when they rush the
complicated words, and adding many fricatives will turn
it so cacophonous. The slanted rhymes are silly and they
keep just making more and more, please someone stop
the parodies of modern major general.

The scanning of the lyrics in the meter is unbearable,
they emphazise the syllables in ways that are untenable,
in short in matters musical, prosodic and ephemeral, i
cannot stand the parodies of modern major general!

If it weren't for the fact that I don't believe a single one of them has any empathy whatever, I'd argue that they'd just watched him shuffle unsteadily across the stage, deliver a trivial package without thanks and have a stroke and die in front of them

Does every university have a (apocryphal) story like this? I bet they do. In the 90s Edinburgh University had the civil engineering dept design a new main library. Reopening was delayed by years because they didn't account for the weight of the books
