Dear Mr. Adama:
Thanks for your letter inviting me to join the committee of the Arts and Sciences for Bisenhower.
I must decline, for secret reasons.

A new study shows a clear regional divide in future US hurricane landfalls: while tropical cyclone frequency is projected to decline along the Gulf Coast—including Texas—it will steadily increase along the Southeastern US coastline throughout the 21st century. 🌊🧪 ocean2climate.org/2026/09/29/f...

1 ZJ = 1.7 TES?
from https://www.energyinst.org/exploring-energy/resources/news-centre/media-releases/global-electrification-reaches-tipping-point-as-energy-demand-hits-record-highs-and-regional-paths-diverge

Total energy supply (TES) exceeded 600EJ in 2025, a rise of 1.7% over 2024, continuing the long-term upward trend in energy demand. Renewables were the largest source of TES growth for the first time outside of a recession, with solar power accounting for 71% of this renewable increase. Fossil fuels continued to expand in absolute terms and retained their dominant position, accounting for 86% of TES. All sources of energy supply, globally, saw increases in 2025.

In a warming climate, relative SST is attractive compared to fixed SST thresholds because theory connects it to tropical convection and empirical results connect it to potential intensity. Vecchi et al. (2008) asked "Whither Hurricane Activity?" about future projections and this is the future now

The 2026 El Niño is second only to 1997 when you account for climate change, but easily first if you leave climate change in. Nice 2026 El Niño article by Emily Becker at climate.us (the former climate.gov killed by the Orange One).

Then he put the paper in the bottle, and he corked the bottle up as tightly as he could, and he leant out of his window as far as he could lean without falling in, and he threw the bottle as far as he could throw-splash!—and in a little while it bobbed up again on the water; and he watched it floating slowly away in the distance, until his eyes ached with looking, and sometimes he thought it was the bottle, and sometimes he thought it was just a ripple on the water which he was following, and then suddenly he knew that he would never see it again and that he had done all that he could do to save himself.

I worked in building that he designed and this tracks
The famous London skyscraper nicknamed the "Walkie-Talkie" (located at 20 Fenchurch Street)—designed by architect Rafael Viñoly—was blamed in 2013 for reflecting and concentrating sunlight into a intense "heat ray" that melted parts of parked cars and scorched shop doormats. It had nothing to do with walkie-talkie radios or climate change; rather, the building's concave glass design acted like a giant parabolic mirror.

The values show the forecasted range of Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) values for 9 upcoming, overlapping 3-month seasons (each letter represents a month, F = February). The color shading shows the forecast ranges, with the darkest color shading indicating that there is a 50% chance that the forecasted RONI values will remain between the RONI values displayed. There is a 90% chance that forecasted RONI values will remain between the upper and lower edges of the lightest color shading. The middle color shade provides the RONI forecast range with a 70% chance. Alternatively, the table provides RONI values corresponding to the various percentiles displayed in the image.

El Niño usually isn't all bad. It can block hurricanes, even ease CPI in some cases. But in a warming climate, there's a lot of uncertainty about how it will play out - especially if it's the strongest we've seen since 1950. Read free: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202... /end

I think we should also measure our success by whether what we do "enables people to understand and think more clearly and effectively about the world around us." I think that climate science was *already* struggling to measure success in this way, and the advent of LLMs will make this harder!

ENSO forecasts from individual models can be “idiosyncratic” and their average tends to be better. Here is the NMME multimodal mean dressed with a synthetic, performance-based 100-member ensemble (with code) github.com/mktippett/nm...
Line chart showing a synthetic 100-member NMME forecast plume for Niño 3.4 seasonal sea-surface temperature anomalies from JAS through AMJ. Thin pale-blue lines represent individual ensemble members, dashed gray lines mark the 10th and 90th percentiles, and a thick black line shows the multi-model mean. The mean rises from about 1.7°C in JAS to a peak near 2.6°C in OND–NDJ, then declines steadily to about 0.6°C by AMJ. Ensemble spread is widest around boreal winter and remains substantial into spring.

The first thing to know about Southern English is that it is all about syllables. In this part of the world, single-syllable words can become fifteen, sometimes sixteen-syllable words.

For instance, you might have heard the word “chair” pronounced as a one-syllable word in New Jersey. It’s alright, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Your wife, however, likely pronounces this word as “CHAY-yurr.” Southerners add these extra syllables to words because this is America and you can’t tell me what to do, sucker.
