VCs: Look past the pitch & stop falling for narcissistic charm. Dark traits drive pitch performance, not company success. Instead: conduct 360-degree reference checks with former subordinates and peers. Not just references provided by the founder! True character shows in how they treat staff.

The thing that I’ve continuously failed to successfully communicate is an unbridled focus on design system adoption is a one way trip to devolving into a UI library. A design system isn’t a design system if every single edge case/preference is covered. It’s exclusionary by design.

The "he's off his rocker, but genius" for start-up founders is dead. 💀 ⛔️ Data confirms Dark Triad traits offer ZERO cognitive or intelligence advantages. ☣️ Toxic behaviors in leadership aren't a byproduct of elite intellect; it’s an abusive pathology that damages companies & ppl inside them.

While historical tech culture romanticized the "brilliant but difficult" leader, data reveals the true long-term cost: 📉 Accelerated employee burnout and high turnover 🚫 Eradication of psychological safety, killing actual innovation 💸 Severe financial and reputational risk

7. Short-Term Vendor Churn: High turnover of external partners (contractors, law firms, accounting partners). Toxic founders frequently blame external vendors for internal failures, leading to severed contracts. END 💔

Mariesa @mklenz.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
6. Burn Rate Anomalies: Unexplained spikes in travel, entertainment, or lifestyle expenses (like expensing a car loan) that suggest the founder treats company capital as personal funds.
100
Mariesa @mklenz.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
5. Exploding Legal Fees: Line items for legal expenses that track significantly above the budgeted forecast, often masking nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) or severed contract disputes.
100
Mariesa @mklenz.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
4. Wholesale Strategy Pivots: Multiple drastic, un-backed shifts in company strategy within a single fiscal year. This often indicates a founder who prioritizes personal whims over data and board guidance.
100
Mariesa @mklenz.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
3. Glassdoor & Internal Pulse Score Drops: A rapid decline in workplace satisfaction ratings, specifically matching a sharp drop in "Approval of CEO" below 60%.
100
Mariesa @mklenz.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
2. Early-Hire Churn: A high departure rate of "Day 1" employees or critical technical talent. When the people who built the core product leave abruptly, it usually points to a toxic environment.

If you're a VC, how could you know that one of your investments is run by a toxic leader? What metrics do you look at? 1. A turnover rate of over 20% within the C-suite or VP level in a 12-month period. Toxic founders frequently clash with seasoned executives who push back on erratic decisions.

Great leadership isn't about being a tyrant with a pattern of letting people go after giving them the silent treatment. We need to stop mistreating people in the name of "disruption" and "impact" and other made-up excuses. #OrganizationalPsychology #WorkplaceCulture #MentalHealth

⛔️ MYTH: Toxic, hyper-aggressive tech founders are just "passionate geniuses" whose results justify their behavior. 😳 REALITY: Decades of meta-analytic research show traits like psychopathy, Machiavellianism, & narcissism don't drive sustained success, they destroy companies from the inside.

A while back I worked for a CEO that consistently blamed this problem on his employees (no responsibility himself, of course). The sad-yet-hilarious part was he told a colleague, "I hate strategy. I even hate the word." Gee, maybe that's why you're hemorrhaging money? 🤔 This article nails it.

Art work in progress 🧵🕊🪡 Lately I've been bringing embroidery thread into my drawings. Thread is all about connection; it ties things together, mends, holds. But it's also a line that can fray, snap, or leave gaps between the stitches.

Over the last two weeks, I found out (after the fact) that meetings I attended 1:1 were transcribed & recorded without my consent. Is this what we've come to now as a society? We're just surveillancing each other w/o permission and its just normalized behavior under the guise of 'note taking'? 🤬

The word "toxic" is used so often it's worth being specific. Research consistently identifies three drivers of workplace toxicity: poor leadership, dysfunctional social norms, and poorly designed roles. In short, the experience of chronic emotional unsafety. www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-em...

Why Emotionally Intelligent People Struggle Most in Toxic Workplaces
Here is something that does not get said enough: the people who feel things most deeply are usually the first ones broken by a toxic environment. Not the most brittle.

Unpopular opinion, but a peaceful life is built through confrontation of issues, not avoidance. Conflict is inevitable but it doesn't have to be invective. People who insist on consistently avoiding tough conversations are willfully embracing toxicity and should be avoided at all costs.

What Being a Chief of Staff Taught Me About Being a Designer
Finding space to breathe again. I return to my desk, newly assembled after making the almost 3,000 mile journey across the Pacific Ocean from Washington State to Hawaii. The space is new but the tools are so familiar. I look around and it feels like seeing good friends after a long hiatus. There’s something different though in this new space and it has nothing to do with the contents of the room.
