Among voters who could write a coherent, 5-paragraph essay justifying their vote, Harris surely won by double-digits. Unfortunately, most voters are not in the category. It's all vibes for them.

Being a (white, male) pastor insulates him from the "activist" vibes that usually plague pro-immigrant advocates. This is important, because the average voter's feelings towards activists ranges from eyerolling mockery at best to seething rage at worst.

The Biden era complaint that "nobody wants to work anymore" is really a complaint that we elevated what was formerly a permanent underclass of low-wage workers into not needing to do those jobs while also contributing to demand (inflation), and everyone lost their shit.

This is what Democrats love -- and independents respect -- about Jon Ossoff as well. Too many (older) Democrats are in the decorum/decency mindset that what appeals to independents is being kind to one's opponent. That may have been true in 1990, but today just screams weakness. Throw a punch!

It's fine if people don't want to have liberal arts education. Go ahead, have large gaps in understanding the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Live your life ignorant, incomplete, undeveloped, inadequate. You have the right to be a worse citizen, a shallow dullard, a lesser person.

the average person has no idea what their government does on a daily basis. they just dont know. and for decades the right has used this as a launching point to propagandize the idea that the government simply cannot work. yes, being mayor is different from being president. but people need this.

Susan Collins has voted to confirm 60+ anti-abortion judges in her time in the Senate, and now she's voted for 3 more just since last week. Nice to see Senator Collins was able to take a break from lying about corruption to give a lifetime appointment to another anti-choice judge.

We have to hang them with the faux-war in Iran. Not as misuse of funds or as weakening military capacity or even as driving up costs, but as a complete and total embarrassment that should end any ridiculous notion of Trump as a tough and powerful leader.

The key to getting low-information voters to vote for Democrats or just to sit out elections is to do everything possible to brand Republicans and especially Trump as stupid losers that are embarrassing to associate with. Make them the NY Jets fans of politics.

I think more than that, immediately after January 6, he was a complete embarrassment to be associated with, but instead of saddling Republicans with that embarrassment, we pivoted the message to a high-and-mighty defense of democracy against powerful authoritarianism, which just makes us look weak.

We need to have a reckoning about Dem fundraising communication. Sure, "we're hapless losers and you should panic" probably gets Boomer donors to open their wallets. But "we're hapless losers" is a pretty bad vibe to have around the party when voters are assessing who's a strong, worthy leader.

I think that's less of an issue than painting Trump as a feared authority figure instead of an embarrassing loser. Playing the righteous activists/underdogs is a losing proposition when people are looking for cues that you deserve to be in charge.

I like the way you put this, and I think this is exactly right. Playing the underdog, or pointing to your victimization may garner sympathy, but it wont get you support for putting you in charge. Politics is about being winning trust to be put in charge, not winning sympathy.

Genuinely an insane paragraph from Sam Alito. “Voter fraud is real and scary and we have to stop it, so the fact that implementing Trump’s mail ballot rule will disenfranchise millions is legally irrelevant.” Brain melted. A right-wing podcaster in a robe. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

Just once in my life I would like to see a Democrat being interviewed by right wing media like Fox News or right wing media like every single other outlet treat their questions with the contempt they deserve. I know it's not going to fix everything or maybe even anything but how much coverage and how much groundswell of excitement from the base do you think it would inspire if when asked about "boys in girls sports" or some other stupid fucking culture war distraction one of them finally said "What the fuck are you talking about man? You sound like a dumb asshole right now."

What's the worst that's going to happen the New York Times is gonna work overtime to make sure you don't get elected? They were already doing that buddy.

You simply say "Are you stupid? Do you think I am stupid? And do you think all of the people watching at home are stupid? Everyone sees through what you are doing. Using one group as a scapegoat for the very real problems everyone has – all caused by Republicans by the way – unlike this fake one you have made up. Dumb asshole."

Just go on the attack for once instead of sitting there trying to please your enemy who is in the process of trying to humiliate you.

And if you want to say something else true that almost no Democrat ever says for some reason you can top it off with a “Every single Republican in our lifetime has sought to make our lives worse in every way possible. I’d like to try to stop that.”

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.
Abdul El-Sayed: "Weijia, with all due respect, this is the third time you've asked about a Twitch streamer ... their whole game is to make us fight culture wars so that we don't pay attention to the fact the president has made $2.2 billion ... "

The thing about Talarico's answer on transgender participation in sports is that the people making an issue out of this don't care about "fairness" or "safety." They care about making trans people feel unwelcome, unwanted, and other (at the very least). No practical answer will satisfy the bigots.

The operative word, and why this attack is so successful, is "little," not "bigot." People don't care that Republicans are bigots. It's often a feature. But showing that we look down on them, that we disdain them, that we're willing to bully them, makes us look like the rightful ruling party.

Voters judge leaders on how they deal with an enemy. Trump himself became the enemy against whom Democrats' performance is judged. And voters decided that Dems look like losers when dealing with him. This is why "not Trump" only works when Trump is in power and the election is a referendum on him.

Of course they don't care about virtue or integrity. However, assertively sticking up for one's values, while bullying one's opponent, gives the appearance of "toughness," which the ignorant median voter *does* care about (subconsciously and instinctually).
