In Celtic lore, the Morrigan is a goddess of war, destiny, death, and sovereignty. She actively shapes the outcome of wars by instilling psychological terror, manipulating emotions, and delivering chillingly accurate prophecies of doom or victory, and hovers over the dead as a crow. #WyrdWednesday

by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) presents a glowing Japanese lantern plant or winter cherry (hōzuki) suspended from a slender metallic pin. The lantern-like outer calyx is hand-formed from gossamer-thin, translucent resin in vibrant shades of amber-gold and fiery orange, framed by delicate vertical wire ribs that taper to a soft point at the base. Suspended within the glowing translucent husk is a spherical, deep-red berry, catching backlighting to radiate like a miniature burning sun. Draped along the straight metallic shaft (kanzashi-foot) is a delicate chain strung with faceted crystal beads in violet, amethyst, amber, and olive tones, culminating in a teardrop-cut violet crystal pendant. The ornament is backlit against a soft, luminous white and pale-gray gradient sky.

Vertical orientation documentary photograph titled "THE TUNNEL ". The composition captures a group of tourists walking away from the camera through a dark, high-vaulted stone tunnel entrance known as the Meridian Gate (Wumen) at the Forbidden City in Beijing. Strong chiaroscuro lighting illuminates the smooth, curved red-toned ceiling of the arch while leaving the sides in shadow. On the left wall, a modern security camera and speaker are mounted. At the end of the stone-paved tunnel, the bright exit perfectly frames an ancient multi-tiered imperial palace pavilion with traditional yellow-tiled roofs under a clear sky. A tour group flag cuts into the right side of the frame. Make it bend — trees are flexible, so they don’t snap. Scar it, give it a twisted branch — perfect trees don’t exist. Nothing is perfect. Flaws are interesting. Be the tree. 💙 ― Laurie Halse Anderson #ThickTrunkTuesday #Trees #Forest #ColorAdAy #BlueTue #Photography #ECK
This image captures a low-angle view looking up at a single, dramatic pine tree that stands out sharply against a bright blue sky with thin, wispy clouds. The tree has a highly distinct, weathered appearance that suggests a life of struggling growth in a harsh environment.
The main trunk grows out from a rocky, moss-covered slope at the bottom right. Instead of growing straight up, it leans sharply to the left at a diagonal angle before curving back upward, giving it an S-like silhouette. The bark is dark, rough, and deeply textured.
Near the top, the tree splits into thick, gnarled branches that twist frantically in different directions. Many of these upper branches are completely bare, skeletal, and devoid of needles, pointing sharply like jagged fingers.
The tree shows signs of struggle, as its central and upper crown lacks the lush, green canopy of a healthy pine. Most of its living, green needles are sparse or concentrated on lower, secondary branches, leaving the top looking exposed and weathered.
In the background and sides, healthier, upright pine and deciduous trees with green and autumn-yellow leaves frame the central tree. Sunlight hits the upper left side of the twisted trunk, casting a warm glow that contrasts with the deep blue sky and scattered white clouds behind it.

From 1933, a young Japanese woman playing the shamisen.
Captured in an intimate monochrome studio photograph from 1933, this image portrays a young woman seated cross-legged on a tatami floor, absorbed in playing the shamisen. Strikingly styled in Western fashion (yōfuku), she wears a tailored dark jacket over a light blouse featuring a soft, ruffled cape-like collar with a deep V-neckline, paired with a dark skirt. Her short, waved bob haircut reflects the iconic moga ("modern girl") aesthetic of the interwar era. She holds the three-stringed instrument across her lap, her left hand fingering the long wooden neck (sao) while her right hand rests upon the skin-covered soundbox (dō). Behind her, simple, muted paper sliding doors (fusuma) with a dark wooden frame and a circular finger-pull (hikite) form a quiet, domestic backdrop.

Captured in an intimate, quiet moment by photographer eyawlk60, this photograph, titled Sato no Chinju ("Guardian Deity of the Village"), portrays a rustic, roadside Shinto shrine (hokora) sheltered in a rural grove. Constructed from raw timber posts and a pitched wooden roof painted in a weathered reddish-brown hue, the small shrine structure holds small porcelain fox statues (kitsune)—the messengers of Inari—alongside miniature offerings of sake cups and small vases. Scattered across the sloped wooden roof and surrounding ground are delicate fallen maple leaves (momiji) in brilliant shades of yellow, crimson, and green. Standing behind the shrine is an ancient stone stele inscribed with weathered kanji characters (San-kyō Daimyōjin or local tutelary deity), its moss-draped surface blending into the shadowy, soft-focus background of palm fronds and woodland foliage.

Ine no Funaya (or de Boat Houses of Ine) in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Visual and Sensory Analysis
Captured along the tranquil water’s edge of Ine Bay in northern Kyoto Prefecture, this striking photograph depicts a dense row of traditional wooden boathouses (funaya). Built directly over the calm, emerald-green waters of the bay, the two-story timber structures feature open ground-floor garages (funa-gura) where small fishing skiffs lie moored, their reflections shimmering softly across the glassy sea surface. Upper stories, constructed with weathered dark cedar siding and topped with blue-gray ceramic tiled roofs (kawara), serve as living quarters and storage areas. Rising directly behind the pitched rooflines, a magnificent, blooming cherry tree (sakura) bursts in vibrant magenta-pink blossoms, its luminous canopy framed against a dense backdrop of evergreen forest.

“Raindrops?” maiko Ayano. Photography by ONIHIDE on Flickr
Visual and Sensory Analysis
Captured by photographer ONIHIDE in the historic passageways of Kyoto, this photograph—titled “Raindrops?”—portrays Maiko Ayano walking away from the lens down a narrow, stone-paved alleyway (roji). Dressed in a soft, dusty-pink silk kimono adorned with subtle floral sprigs, she wears a crisp white woven obi sash decorated with diamond-shaped medallions (hanabishi) enclosing colorful botanical embroidery. She holds her left hand outstretched palm-up in a gentle, questioning gesture to check for falling rain, while her right arm cradles a small matching pink purse. Her dark hair is styled in a traditional coiffure accented with a red silk ornament (kanzashi), and she glides across the damp flagstones in raised wooden clogs (okobo). Shadowy machiya facades flank the lane, creating a deep, linear perspective that draws the eye toward the distant street

Crafted with extraordinary botanical realism by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) depicts a flowering plum branch (ume) in early spring bloom
Crafted with extraordinary botanical realism by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) depicts a flowering plum branch (ume) in early spring bloom resting upon a dark, textured wood surface. Five-petaled open blossoms and unopened orb-like buds extend along a gnarled, dark-brown branch wrapped tightly in fiber or thread. The petals transition from translucent milky-white at their rounded edges to a soft crimson-pink flush near the center, framed by ultra-fine golden wire contours. At the heart of each open bloom, delicate golden stamens tipped with bright yellow pollen-beads cluster around a central pistil. Unopened buds appear as glossy, spherical white pearls encased in deep reddish-brown sepals. Emerging from the base of the gnarled branch is a double-pronged brass hair pin (kanzashi-foot) with wavy tines designed to secure the ornament within a traditional hair arrangement.

Crafted with sublime, crystalline precision by Fukuoka-based resin artist Sakae, this hair ornament (kanzashi) depicts a cluster of gentian or bellflower-like blossoms suspended above a soft, rippling watery surface. Two fully opened trumpet-shaped blooms radiate in translucent sapphire-blue, their ultra-thin resin petals framed by dark, delicate wire contours that capture ambient light along their flared edges. Tiny, glistening resin droplets cling to the inner throat and petal surfaces, mimicking fresh morning dew. Nestled beneath the blue petals are delicate, chartreuse-green leaves and closed buds extending along a slender black pin (kanzashi-foot). Below, the smooth, pale-blue background reflects the soft ripples of liquid water, casting a shadowy, blurred reflection of the ornament into the depths.

Tiger in a Thunder Storm Raiu ni tora 雷雨に虎図 Manjirô Hokuga Koka era (1844–48) to Ansei 3 (1856) MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink and color on flax DIMENSIONSImage: 53.8 x 34.2 cm (21 3/16 x 13 7/16 in.) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
n this dramatic Edo-period hanging scroll, Raiu ni tora図 (Tiger in a Thunderstorm), artist Manjirō Hokuga depicts a powerful tiger hunkered down against a tempestuous gale. Painted on silk, the beast turns its head backward in a sinuous, tense arch, its eyes flashing with sharp intensity as a flash of lightning slices through the ink-laden sky. Hokuga renders the tiger's fur with remarkable tactile detail: fine, layered brushstrokes construct its supple pelt, while mottled spots around its muscular legs and razor-sharp claws anchor its heavy stance upon a rocky, moss-dusted outcrop. Behind the tiger, a slender stalk of bamboo bends precipitously under the pressure of gale-force winds, its sharp leaves whipping violently toward the right. Swirling washes of dark sumi ink dominate the upper atmosphere, capturing the ominous weight of thunderclouds bursting with rain. The composition awakens a visceral, atmospheric sensory world: the sudden, ozone-tinged chill of a summer thunderstorm, the deafening crack of thunder echoing off mountain crags, the low, reverberating growl of a coiled predator, the sharp rustle of wind-swept bamboo, and the heavy dampness of torrential rain striking earth and stone.

Sakai Hoitsu(酒井抱一 Japanese, 1761-1828) 青面金剛像
In this striking late Edo-period hanging scroll, Rimpa school master Sakai Hōitsu depicts the wrathful deity Shōmen Kongō (the Blue-Face Vajra) surrounded by his esoteric retinue against a pitch-black silk ground. At the center of the composition, six-armed, green-skinned Shōmen Kongō leaps in a dynamic martial stance, his third eye flashing, teeth bared, and red hair standing on end like a halo of flame. He wields sacred attributes—including a trident, wheel of the law (cakra), bow, arrow, and lasso—while stepping firmly upon squirming demons (jaki). Draped around his waist is a tiger-skin loincloth, and a red serpent coils around his raised leg. Surrounding the central deity are two youthful attendants (dōji) bearing offerings, flanked at the four corners by fierce attendant guardians holding swords and spears, their billowing scarves floating against the deep, void-like black background. The painting evokes a potent, ritualistic sensory atmosphere: the quiet tension of an esoteric nocturnal altar, the imagined smell of burning incense and lamp oil, the crackle of ritual flames, and the intense, protective aura of a wrathful deity invoked in the dead of night.

Letchworth State Park landscape painting capturing natural beauty of Upstate New York during autumn. The composition features multiple perspectives of the changing season. Close-up views of individual leaves in the foreground display vibrant fall colors ranging from deep reds and oranges to yellows and browns, showing peak autumn color change.

In the middle distance and background, the broader landscape view shows the expansive vista of Letchworth State Park. A prominent rock cliff formation is visible on the far side of the composition, representing the geological features that define this scenic natural area.

This artwork celebrates the beauty of the natural world during autumn, when changing leaves create spectacular displays of color and light. Framed landscape painting of Honeoye Lake in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York during autumn season. The composition captures the serene beauty of the shallow, warm waters of Honeoye Lake, one of the Finger Lakes known for recreational fishing and kayaking.

The shallow nature of the lake is evident in the water's clarity and warmth. A sunrise illuminates the shoreline, casting warm light across the scene and suggesting an early morning moment on the water.

Autumn foliage is visible along the lake shores and surrounding landscape, displaying the seasonal color change characteristic of the Finger Lakes region during fall. The warm tones of autumn complement the peaceful mood of the scene.

The artwork evokes themes of outdoor recreation, fishing, kayaking, connection to nature, and the peaceful solitude found on quiet morning waters. The lake represents a place of refuge, memory, and renewal where families and friends gather across generations to share experiences and create meaningful moments.

The painting captures the sentiment that spending time on familiar waters reconnects us with what matters most: slowing down, appreciating simple pleasures, and maintaining connection to nature and to one another. Honeoye Lake serves as a symbol of belonging within a community of lake lovers who understand the value of peaceful outdoor spaces.
