Bluesky Dr Who discourse right now is giving me flashbacks to when I first got into internet fandom in the 90s - the McCoy era was a disaster, it killed Dr Who, nothing after Tom Baker really 'counts', only idiots like late 80s Who, and everyone knows how it could have been done better.

Previously considered a tiger cat, Leopardus Tilcayo has clawed its way to a new identity as a unique species of feline. The species is likely a whisker away from being added to the endangered species list. The destruction of their home, the Bolivian Cloud Forest, would be a catastrophe for Tilcayo.

So this was every bit as bad as the reviews suggested. 30 minutes before the plot met the novel it's based on. Changes that scream 'studio note'. Guy Pearce being his usual bland self. Samantha Mumba showing why she didn't have a big film career ahead. Jeremy Irons hoping no-one would recognise him.

Finally given in to morbid curiosity and am watching the 2002 film adaptation of The Time Machine starring Guy Pearce. 25 minutes in and I'm still waiting for anything from the novel to happen aside from him travelling forward in time (in a sequence that does at least borrow the novel's imagery)

jon ronson has written a book about men who go crazy online and he's dedicated an entire chapter to graham linehan. graham is not going to like the observer review.
Ronson’s account of Graham Linehan is another harrowing tale of a man’s life ruined by the internet. Linehan was a beloved comedy writer, co-creator of Father Ted, and a prolific presence on Twitter, where he was well liked and respected. Then, in 2013, something began to shift, when an episode of his sitcom The IT Crowd, first broadcast in 2008, was repeated. In it, a man discovers his girlfriend is transgender and a brawl breaks out between the two. Viewers did not like the display of violence nor the supposed implication that the trans woman was “really” a man, underlying maleness bursting forth uncontrollably once she is angry.

Linehan responded to criticism with polite bafflement, then defensiveness, and finally overt anger. He began to research transgender issues and developed a singular obsession with the topic, which has since gone on to comprehensively destroy his career and personal life. Linehan, who believes trans activism and indeed ordinary trans existence pose an existential threat to women, talks of little else (except, these days, a fervent pro-Israel stance). He tweets near-constantly, cloaking his obsession with supposed concern for the wellbeing of cisgender women, but he does not balk at aggressively insulting those women who disagree with him.Linehan’s self-ignited ruin stopped being satisfying for even his opponents to watch a while back, and now is only profoundly depressing. Ronson was once a good friend, but in refusing to endorse Linehan’s beliefs about transgender issues, he was added to his long list of his enemies. In The Castle, Ronson speaks to him directly, having been attacked countless times on Linehan’s social media feed. One thing that becomes clear, beyond the truly abject state of Linehan’s wellbeing, is that he is able to persevere with his campaign because he has convinced himself he is battling the greatest danger currently at play in the world. At one point he suggests that there are so many fewer serial killers nowadays because all the sociopaths have migrated to the internet in order to argue with him about trans issues instead. It reminded me of religious protesters screaming at me in Dublin once, as I walked into a reproductive-rights clinic that provided information about abortion. I was furious, but then forced myself to think about how I would feel or act if I truly, earnestly believed that every abortion is equivalent to the murder of a child. That might, indeed, drive me mad.

The Linehan chapter is brilliant: insightful, candid and moving. I’m still not convinced that any broader crisis of masculinity or male purpose had much to do with Linehan’s downfall, though. He wasn’t at a loss or empty of purpose when he began his campaign. He didn’t turn to vitriol because he didn’t have anything else to do. His case is, if anything, notable for involving a man with an enviable life and abundant success throwing it away for reasons that to many in the outside world may seem obscure or deranged.

I do find it odd that, given that he produced one of their best characterisations on TV and his friendship with McCoy and Aldred, Marc Platt has only written two 7th Doctor audios for Big Finish. Seems a massive wasted opportunity unless he doesn't want to return to those characters for some reason.

Remember Streeting's review into whether young people are being overdiagnosed with ADHD, autism, and mental health issues? Well, the interim report is out, and there's a reason the media are silent on it (spoiler: it proves what a lot of us have been saying all along)
In others, notably ADHD and autism, rising diagnoses and referrals appear to exceed changes in underlying epidemiological prevalence and are likely to reflect a combination of:

improved recognition
changing help-seeking behaviour
institutional incentives
pressures within existing service pathways
Across both ADHD and autism, best currently available population-based estimates remain relatively stable, while administrative diagnoses, self-identification and recorded service demand have increased substantially. In autism, the evidence also points to particularly rapid growth in identified need within educational systems, including increasing identification among girls and among young people without learning disability. These patterns suggest that rising demand is not simply the result of increasing prevalence, but of several processes operating simultaneously, including:

real increases in distress in some groups
improved recognition of previously unmet need
changing expectations about support
systems that frequently rely on formal diagnosis as the primary route to assistance
Across the system, support is too often accessed through pathways that are slow, fragmented and heavily dependent on diagnostic categorisation. While diagnosis remains essential for some forms of clinical decision-making, the evidence suggests that current arrangements do not always provide the most effective or efficient way of identifying and responding to need. In particular, where access to support depends heavily on formal diagnosis, demand for diagnostic assessment can increase more rapidly than systems are able to respond, generating long waiting times, duplication of assessment and pressure on specialist services.

The next phase of the review will therefore focus on clarifying the relationship between distress, diagnosis and need, and on examining how systems might respond more effectively to these patterns. A central objective will be to identify opportunities for developing more coherent, evidence-informed care pathways that enable support to be provided earlier and more proportionately, while ensuring that specialist services are available in a timely and appropriate manner for those whose needs are most complex.
