The BBC gave Calvino half an episode of Bookmark in 1985 when they should have given him a whole episode of Arena or Omnibus. He didn't enjoy being interviewed but he still did a lot of interviews. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2UU...

Calvino apparently said that The Argentine Ant was not an exaggeration of the behaviour of the ants in question, and this suggests that if anything he under-sold their numbers and levels of aggression.

I don't usually collect different editions of the same book (unless it's an illustrated or otherwise special edition) but for £2.50 I just had to.

June's #CalvinoBookClub title is the club's first foray into Calvino's non-fiction - the collection of autobiographical essays The Road to San Giovanni. As ever please read along and share your thoughts with the hashtag.

April's #CalvinoBookClub title will be...The Watcher (1963), from The Watcher & Other Stories. For some reason this novella does not seem to have been released in the UK. This US collection also includes Smog and The Argentine Ant. The translation is by William Weaver.

March 2024's Calvino Book Club title was The Cloven Viscount, a novella that is the first story in the 'Our Ancestors' collection. I first read this in the late 90s, and was maybe the 5th or 6th Calvino I read.

Finished Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, it's a nice short read. The way it fears how words kill the abstract and the horror of infinite roads never traveled (the should've could've would'ves) through eulogies is great. Choosing negative space for the large fonts really stands out to me.
Passage from Invisible Cities:

"When a man rides a long time through the wild regions he feels the desire for a city. Finally he comes to Isidora, a city where the buildings have spiral staircases encrusted with spiral seashells, where perfect telescopes and violins are made, where the foreigner hesitating between two women always encounters a third, where cockfights degenerate into bloody brawls among the bettors. He was thinking of all these things when he desired a city. Isidora, therefore, is the city of his dreams: with one difference.
The dreamed-of city contained him as a young man; he arrives at Isidora in his old age. In the square there is the wall where the old men sit and watch the young go by; he is seated in a row with them. Desires are already memories."
