Check out this amazing drawing of C. elegans by Wenzhe Li @dustybutkindofnice on Instagram! It’s a model organism used in research to study mitosis, meiosis, and can survive extreme cold. 🧬❄️ #SciComm #ModelOrganism #Celegans #SciArt #Mitosis #Meiosis #Cryo #Biology #Worms #Research

Sunday Sketch: Nematode
Caenorhabditis elegans is a nematode. It can survive extreme cold weather at -80°C by entering a state of suspended metabolism called cryptobiosis. A similar mechanism to survive extreme cold weath…

To merely exist without daily fear and anxiety would be an awfully big adventure

Someone missed me while I was away at #worm25 but I was off gathering new ideas and fostering new connections. Thank you to the organizers and @genetics-gsa.bsky.social overall a really good conference despite some of the challenges ☺️

Such a great plenary by Junho Lee. Combining behavior, natural variation, connectomics to explain the mind of a dauer. And full of fun history and anecdotes. #worm25

My labmate and I had time to kill between the conference and our flight tonight and went to the Crocker art museum in Sacramento. 10/10 experience. The art there is amazing. So many beautiful and provocative pieces, and I have a high bar for art having grown up near the Art Institute of Chicago

Amazing talk about personal scientific journey of perseverance @rogerslabucd.bsky.social and way forward for advocating for science. #worm25
Reminders to myself and others
• Apply often, apply broadly, and diversify funding.
• Fight misinformation about science and scientists (publicly and/or privately).
• Use social media for advocacy, branding, and SciComm- expand your network.
• Maximize your resources- learn how to do science on a budget.
• Bring your whole self to science (when you can safely).
• Celebraie AUlL of your wins, long aid small!!
• Always keep your options open and approach science and academia with flexibility.

I’m feeling hopeful and inspired at Pamela Padilla’s #worm25 talk. We have work to do. We should be kind while doing it.

Amazing talk (and videos) in plenary 2 from Xiangyi Ding ( @danstarrucdavis.bsky.social ) about biophys constraints in cytoplasm. #Celegans cytoplasm is more like jelly than honey (human cells), plus found gene that constrains this mess particle diffusion. #worm25 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I am excited (as usual) about attending #Worm25. But I am also sad that so many friends and colleagues can't be there. Because you know....insane policies and war and such. Hoping the science will provide at least a temporary distraction from the unending chaos.
