Cosplaying Irishness isn't new and it's a rant I go on every March. Irish identity has so much possibility beyond the try-hards who use the marginalizations of their ancestors to make themselves interesting or excuse harm, and history can fuel solidarity in meaningful ways for those who choose it.

It's tempting to view this as an unconditionally positive Robin Hood situation because fuck Adobe, and I admit I fell for it for about five minutes. Considering the amount of reliance on generative AI, hard pass. & the fact that this was even possible has scary implications for data security.

I don't have a good answer to this other than that we need more collective solutions, but we're not going to get that if we keep pulling each other down like crabs in a bucket. If those people doing the pulling can't accept a "no" and stay in community, then that doesn't mean the "no" was wrong.

When everyone above you in the societal power structure has let you down or taken from you, it's easy to lash out at the person just one step above you who you perceive as doing the same: the bar owner or the game runner, even when that person is also marginalized and trying to help their community.

I've seen this happen in larp spaces as well, and it tends to end in a lot of crossed boundaries, hurt feelings, and organizers who have to spend more time on community management than actually running the game. Something much larger is broken when a bar or a game is expected to fill those needs.

The other is that social spaces carry a disproportionate amount of weight in queer communities, in ways that are not fair to those who run them. A bar is not allowed to just be a bar. It's expected to be an organizing hub, an emotional support system, a safe space, for people with too few options.

The single good thing coming out of the Last Ditch discourse is more people agreeing that it is not praxis to automatically yield to the most marginalized person in the room when they are acting in bad faith, being deliberately cruel, or lashing out, whether this is the result of trauma or not.

It ALSO allows for multiple paths to a goal. If you've pre-negotiated something with one player and for whatever reason that falls through, they drop or leave, or the plot goes differently, then others still know what you want and you have a shot at getting it.

If a character's goal is to keep it together and a player's goal is to crash out, how would you know? If a character's goal is survival but a player wants a super dramatic death scene, but you don't want to railroad everyone's play, it helps for that to be known.

You don't need to know someone's whole sheet to find the aspects of play that they want. A three-word or one-sentence prompt of what the player (not the character) wants can help just as much as a pre-negotiated relationship or story in helping players lift each other and new stories emerge.

Larp design thoughts: Situations where character goals and player goals may not the same are the ones when player transparency is the most important. Because it's really easy to read people's actions at face value, even in roleplay.
