The results are not always intuitive: while production workers and rural residents are more likely to vote PRR, their support is not rooted in class- or place-based conflicts. Instead, sociocultural conflicts appear to matter more.

Together with Gianluca Piccolino, we explore the relationship between cleavage politics and the populist radical right using original survey data from seven Western European countries.

Happy to share my first publication in @govandopp.bsky.social, one of my reference journals in the field. Publishing there for the first time has a special flavour!

I would still like to mention here @dralbertazziuk.bsky.social, a true mentor whose guidance has been invaluable both during my PhD and at later stages; and @vincenzoemanuele.bsky.social, a 'maestro' and friend whose informal suggestions helped me greatly in turning the thesis into an actual book.

This book closes a journey that began 5 years ago, as it is the result of a substantial reworking of my PhD thesis. It would not exist without the support of many wonderful people who helped me along the way and to whom I am deeply grateful. A (non-exhaustive) list appears in the acknowledgments.

This metropolitan polarisation of politics is driven both by the self-selection of globalisation’s winners and losers into different neighbourhoods and by place-based contextual effects.

The argument is tested through a large-N analysis of public opinion across European metropolises and two in-depth case studies — London and Rome. Using survey, electoral, and contextual data, I show that the 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗔𝗡/𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 is a real and growing phenomenon.

Drawing on cleavage theory, I argue that the rise of a transnational cleavage — TAN vs. GAL values and parties — has a distinct and underexplored metropolitan dimension. 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆.

The book explores an increasingly relevant question in European politics: how are new cultural conflicts linked to globalisation reshaping political attitudes and voting behaviour within European metropolitan areas?

I’ll also continue as adjunct professor of Political Science at LUISS. Many thanks to LUISS and the CISE - especially Lorenzo De Sio and @vincenzoemanuele.bsky.social - for nearly two extremely rewarding years.

With the official prognosis giving one additional seat to PVV and one to FvD compared to the ext poll, the narrative should really not be that the Netherlands/Jetten has beaten the radical right. The far right bloc remains remarkably stable.

Happy to see that our article, “Bringing Rokkan into the twenty-first century: the cleavage structure of Western Europe”, coauthored with @vincenzoemanuele.bsky.social, has made it into the top 5 most read in @jeppjournal.bsky.social over the past year! Proof that cleavage theory is alive and well.
