Rice fields, Hyogo, Japan 別宮の棚田. Photography by ocamera

Captured in a serene, sweeping vertical composition by photographer ocamera, this image showcases the famed Bekku Terraced Rice Fields (Bekku no Tanada) situated in Yabu City, Hyogo Prefecture. Nestled along the mountain slopes facing Mount Hyōno—the second-highest peak in the Kansai region—these sculpted terraced paddies (tanada) represent a quintessential expression of satoyama, the traditional borderland ecosystem where human agricultural stewardship and mountain wilderness exist in harmonious equilibrium. The photograph captures the fields during the crucial mid-spring flooding season, when mountain meltwater is channeled into the carved terraces in preparation for rice planting (taue). The undulating S-curves of the earthen dikes (aze), covered in vibrant spring grasses, form a rhythmic, calligraphic network of green ribbons that partition the quiet, reflective waters (mizukagami—"water mirrors") reflecting the cool, muted tones of the sky.

Winding along an elevated bund, a lone farmer moves through the landscape with a manual soil cultivator, his solitary figure emphasizing the immense physical labor required to maintain these steep, historic agricultural structures. He wears functional contemporary agrarian attire: a lightweight sky-blue utility jacket, dark work trousers, and a white sun cap, grounded by waterproof rubber field boots (nagagutsu) essential for navigating inundated mud paddies. Higher along the ridge, a compact motorized rice transplanter sits loaded with blue tarpaulins, signaling the integration of modern small-scale machinery into ancient topographies. Through its fluid geometric contours, silvery atmospheric reflections, and quiet reverence for agrarian tradition, the photograph celebrates the living heritage of Japan's rural landscape, where generational labor continuously reshapes the earth into functional, breathtaking visual art.

Kanas Lake (Uyghur: قاناس كۆلى) Xinjiang, China Archive Some lakes you visit. This one you remember — a ribbon of glacier-blue cutting through green silence, snow watching from far above. #Scape #KanasLake #Xinjiang #Tien-Shan #AltaiMountains #Travel #Glacier #Lake #Nature #ForestFriday

A turquoise alpine lake winds between forested mountain slopes, with a snow-capped peak visible in the distance under a partly cloudy blue sky. Several small boats leave trails on the calm water.

Die scheinbare Unendlichkeit und die salzige Luft. ☀️ The apparent endlessness and the salty air. #waterwednesday #ECK #eastcoastkin
