The lingering scent of mud and mildew hung in the air, a long-forgotten tomb. The bed’s cast-iron rods dug into my ribs through the thin mattress. I clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering and pulled the threadbare blanket tighter around my body, hugging my knees to my chest. It did little against the chill creeping into my bones. The raging blizzard had transformed the courtyard into a churning white sea, rattling the broken window shutters hanging askew.

I was not allowed visitors or to set foot outside. The faded floral pattern of the peeling wallpaper was my only reminder of life beyond these walls. The medications I was forced to swallow left a cotton taste in my mouth and a dull ache in my skull. At least no screams echoed through the halls today.

Tai’s terrified of humans. Everyone is. Violent pack hunters, humans are notorious for their strength, sharp teeth, and carnivorous appetites. But the ship’s cook is safe among the multispecies crew of the cargo hauler Coreward Baker: everyone knows the warrior species rarely leave their own space. Then Captain Raz hires Clarke, a human horticulturist.
Even after Tai overcomes their fear, they can’t stand Clarke. She’s bossy. Annoying. Useless in the galley, bad in a space suit. She might as well be cargo. Worse, she’s intent on befriending Tai—and why can’t they stop thinking about her, anyway?
That’s when things go wrong. I think he brought me up here so he could clutch me close and splay his palm on my chest to calm my thundering heart. He was different back in those days. Stupid-tall, but not grown into it yet, all lanky limbs and awkward gait. He was already dyeing his hair black but had it cut in some abysmal, shaggy fringe. No tattoos, too much eyeliner, shitty cheap piercings. I could still sometimes make him blush. I curl over myself. I dig my fingers into grooves in the ventilation shafts and bend completely in half. My hair hangs over the drop. A kaleidoscope of neons flutters through the choppy strands. If I could just. Be that person again. Be a person again.

When Gloria joined the crew of the Amaryllis as a burnt out corporate lawyer turned project manager, she had assumed she would be done with contracts. After all, this planet stuck in a perpetual morning was supposed to be empty and a prime colony candidate. However, shortly after arriving, Gloria learns that they were not the only ones with their eye on this planet—nor the land with enough sunlight to be viable.

First contact leads to communication challenges, but even after she and Emeric, the leader of these strange aliens and the single most dramatic man she has ever met, are able to comprehend each other, they have a long way to go before truly understanding each other. They must to work together to fend off a common threat to the mutually coveted Sunny Spot before they can resolve the dispute.

Along the way, she finds that maybe this alien man is more similar to herself than she is comfortable with. Especially in that they are both keeping secrets that could have consequences for the colony and the future of humanity. Gloria has to question if the definition of honesty is truly as universal as she thinks.

"It seemed as though everyone but Gloria shed a tear upon seeing the planet on the ship's descent. After three years of space travel, to not only see land, but their future home, drew out gasps and sighs as the crew pressed up against the windows to catch a glimpse of this strange new world. The lower the ship sloped down, the more it whined and clicked with different mechanisms to prepare for their landing. Breaking through the atmosphere, the blushing clouds yawned around the Amaryllis while it glided into its preordained landing spot. Splotches of watery blues made up the sky around them, giving way to soft purples and their peach clouds. She thought of the morning she left Earth; how the sun had not yet risen and the light had only chased away the shadows just enough to cast a dim film of morning blue. Unlike Earth, she would learn, this sky would remain a slow kaleidoscope of watercolors for the entire span of its rotation."

""Maybe. But I think," he said, his hand moving from her jaw to the nape of her neck, slowly, deliberately, "You want a play partner. And everyone else has been too insipid for you. If that is what you want," he paused, his breath heavy against the shell of her ear, "I promise, I will not leave you bored."

His voice had dropped into a low valley, warm like the bite of whiskey. And it probably said a lot about her that fear was not her primary response to his touch. Her nerves felt electric—he was right, she felt more alive than ever.

"Then you better get to filling out those forms," she all but purred back at him.

Her senses were overwhelmed with the spice of him. He nipped at her earlobe shamelessly, and that same dulcet tone delivered his words so close to the translator. "I will give you enough paperwork that you do not see daylight for a week.""

The castle is under lockdown, and all bets for the crown are placed on their capture.

In the twenty years since the vampires rose up out of the earth, Corado hasn’t done too bad for himself. He’s still alive, for one, and he’s got a lucrative trade as a nightrunner smuggling people beneath the vampiric horde that blots out the sky each night. It's dangerous work, but enough to get a roof over his head and a bottle in his hand at the end of the day. That’s pretty good for life under the vampires.

Then an attack from the horde leaves him stuck in the desert, alone with a newly-orphaned boy, and his luck finally dries up. He resolves to find what remains of the boy’s family and put it all behind him—but instead of taking him off Corado’s hands, his so-called “family” offers a new deal: escort them to the vampiric capital in exchange for a veritable fortune.

Corado knows he shouldn’t. It’s a long, dangerous route, and the group has a smack of sedition to them that he knows firsthand to be a quick way to a bloody death.

It is a hell of a lot of money, though.
