i enjoy rabbits and space and acronym-backronyms as much as the next digital anomaly locked to low-earth orbit, of which there are not many, but this is. hm. this one should have really probably spent more time on the whiteboard maybe just a little itty bitty bit longer

Publishing “Cryptographic Right Answers” for developers is a tradition by now. Colin Percival started in 2009, Thomas Ptacek followed up in 2015, and then Latacora carried on in 2018 and 2024. I put together a list updated for the renewed urgency of migrating to post-quantum algorithms.

Three points are not enough. Now is the time for the twelve-pointed seatbelt; like an occult star clamping you to the seat, like a gray polyp between your body and the road—you will not merely survive the impact. You will THRIVE

We should practice the opposite of bonsai. Instead of small trees we should grow giant blades of grass, massive individual moss stems

The new vehicles combine human sensory advantages with intelligent machine navigation. A computer telepathically ingests the human passenger's perception of the road, and pilots using that mental model

i don't think it would - it'd be gen4x4, same as the actual oculink port, and oculink is also ~never a bottleneck (it probably will be for prefill eventually)- an explicit design goal, heh. yay mechanical sympathy

evo x2 (96gb) / evo x3 (128gb); just linked over a short little thunderbolt cable, the link is never even remotely a bottleneck if you think correctly about how to do the split

and for our happiest decode path (at least 2 concurrent streams + dspark) we pipeline the bingle outta this, having the dGPU computing attention for one stream while the other's MoEs run... just keeping the pipeline solid and maxxing blue light

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
expert + attention/MoE. dGPU runs attention, router, shared expert box1 (128gb) coordinates everything and computes some experts + dspark drafter + vision box2 computes some other experts

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
actually not really at all! dGPU is over Oculink, the Halos are connected via Thunderbolt, and that's plenty fast- we're expert-split, so only activations ever need to cross the bus, and we have *SO MANY* clever tricks and hacks for hiding latency all over the place

lots of edge in Doing The Non-Default Thing right now, picking hardware that is cheap because the software sucks (amd/intel gpus...) or is hard to write for, and then having fable/opus do a breakthrough

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
the hardware market does not seem to be pricing this in quite yet, which is nice

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
notably this sort of beowulf-cluster bullshit can get you quite impressive price-performance ratios if you think laterally on what stuff to buy- BUT until this year, you'd need to do weird software optimizations and hit all sorts of weird bugs and be on the unhappy path. but now coding agents

you can disable this but i think we install tools for node programming and 3d modelling and music making and such by default, and have an motd with fun facts about them. in the same way that windows forces the user to think about buying things, a linux should force the user to consider making things

Two Strix Halo boxes (128GB+96GB) and a dGPU (RX9070XT), so around $7.5k in hardware. which is A Lot for computers, and if I didn't care about privacy and control i'd be a fool to not just pay a penny or two to some inference provider. but i do, so

Two Strix Halo boxes (128GB+96GB) and a dGPU (RX9070XT). Model is 552B params, but 196B are engrams, so for performance purposes it's more like a 356B. We run it unquantized, experts streamed on demand + cache-aware routing (which eliminates basically all cache misses at ~0 quality cost)

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
no it's true. you see, the model doesn't have a head, and thus can't be doing math in it
2701
mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
i think between being 300B params and also having engrams that presumably soak up a lot of the fact-memorization capacity and leave more room in the model weights for "smarts", and ofc better and better distillation... it's really incredible

mimir @mimirwolv.bsky.social · 10/10/2026

Many domains are anti-inductive. Once something becomes common knowledge it stops being useful. Humans retain an advantage here, for now.
