A question posed by @franceswrites.bsky.social during a long industry discussion. Can you think of a SFF book in the past 5 years which was a breakout success, WITHOUT being a) in a crate; b) from an established author; c) an indie success ported to trad? Cause we were struggling.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

A bleak but compelling novel about climate change in the UK with strong characterisation and just a smidgen of hope

Review: They Know Where They’re Going
This new novel from Jenni Daiches is built from several inspirations. The first is that of the American tradition of novels about travelling across the vast wilderness towards the west when White folks were only just consolidating their genocide of native peoples. Daiches takes the sentiment of those novels and transplants them to the UK. This might sound a bit out of place but her setting is a UK and the idea of the farming novel without the farming.

Ghosts linger amid the fields of England, waiting to be summoned by passing feet. As a walker faces the spectres of his own grief, he's drawn into a struggle between the paths connecting us & the boundaries that cut us apart, in Walking a Wounded Land. wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/nove...
Cover with blurbs 1:

The cover of Wiz Duo book 3 with stories by Ruthanna Emrys and Andrew Knighton.

The images are an old, wooden house seen against a mountainous background for Ruthanna's story; and a hiker walking towards the sunset in Andrew's.

Beside it are quotes from other authors:

“Two gorgeously written novellas exploring the ways that our connections to the land and to each other can be broken but also mended, these stories tell of bargains and sacrifices, and ultimately of hopeful futures.” — Sarah Brooks

“Beautiful and haunting.” — Anna Smith Spark

“Beautiful in cadence, powerful in imagery, gentle in spirit, Andrew Knighton’s work takes your heart’s ghosts on dances of things lost” — Danie Ware

“A story that reminds us of the permanence of dreams and the determination of the human spirit. You’ll never walk Britain’s pathways the same again.” – Charlotte Bond
