I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

The University of North Carolina is hiring a historian of Science and Technology, with time, place, and theme otherwise open. Military historians with that expertise should feel encouraged to apply. careers.historians.org/jobs/2260958...

just the most pathetic dipshit loser
Pete Hegseth served in the National Guard for 19 years, leaving as a major in his 19th year. To anyone who served in the military this raises several red flags.

He would have come up for promotion in his 15th thru 18th years. This suggests he was passed over multiple times, even though the promotion rate is close to 70%. In his book he stated he voluntarily left the military in his 19th year because the military was “woke.” His definition of “woke” must be that he’s willing to accept that thousands of white majors were promoted instead of him but he can’t accept that hundreds of Blacks and women were also promoted ahead of him.

If you know any former military members, ask them how many of their fellow soldiers voluntarily left in their 19th year. This just doesn’t compute because serving a few more months to his 20th year would mean that he could retire and receive a check every month for the rest of his life. The more likely scenario is that he was asked to leave. This would help explain his vendetta against Blacks and women. He has pulled senior Black and female officers from responsible positions and deleted their names from promotion lists.

I love the Daily Tar Heel. The students do such a great job of pointing out obvious UNC administration missteps. And in this case, it's a misstep in response to previous critique of a misstep. In the midst of which, Chancellor Lee Roberts remains effectively mute. dailytarheel.com/480536/opini...

In their efforts to explain the boat strikes to the public and respond to Trump’s illegal uses of force, many members of Congress are missing the basic truth, which is that the U.S. is committing mass murder, writes @seharrison7.bsky.social. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-...

The Boat Strikes Aren’t Part of a War. They’re Murder.
By debating war powers and war crimes, Congress is missing the simpler, graver truth: The president is directing summary executions.

I understand why Carl worked with the definition he did, but its culturally confined to states. Keegan made this critique also, but got it wrong. This is a l9ng conversation, but bluf: carl was using the last 150 years in europe as his data. There is more. And that more MATTERS.
3171
Wayne E. Lee @milhistlee.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
That is a weakness in Carl's definition! If one group has complete success with surprise and eliminates its opponent with infintesimal resistance, its still war.

Wayne E. Lee @milhistlee.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
No. Fair point. My original definition that Bret is paraphrasing is that war is collective violence to solve a communal problem. Very often its resources, but "problem" is a flexible definition
120
Wayne E. Lee @milhistlee.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
The violence must be collective. And must be seeking some resource. We could argue about whether avoiding prosecution is a resource related, but typically murder is not an act .of coordinated group violence (although it can be, but all definitios can be undermined with such extreme cases))

For pre-modern contexts, as you know, I tried to show obedience to "law" (custom) was a regular thing. Often violated, but still regular. And Waitman is correct re prisoners. A weird ratio of dead to captured is often a sign of an atrocity (weird is era dependent. There is no one number)
