Last week, about a third of the History department were able to gather together on graduation day. Rather than lend our intellectual authority to the official procession and ceremony we invited our students to come and celebrate their achievements with us in a shady courtyard. They came. 1/
A group of world leading historians in their finery, some in gowns, stand together under a tree. Some carry signs saying 'Historian at risk', other raise a glass to the camera.

Very good, if extremely depressing, piece by Stefan Collini to explain what has been and is being done to this country’s universities. If interested to find out, I recommend reading it.

Newmarket MP Matt Hancock gave a £37bn Covid testing contract to Jockey Club director Dido Harding, who subcontracted it to Grand National sponsor Randox, employer of Tory MP Owen Paterson, whose late wife chaired Aintree racecourse. That's how the Tories handled the pandemic.

Elon Musk openly called for violence on our streets yesterday. I hope politicians from all parties come together to condemn his deeply dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric. Britain must stand united against this clear attempt to undermine our democracy.

4. Failing to clear out the Tories’ highly political appointments to the BBC. They should be replaced immediately with independent people. Until that happens, it will remain a public relations outfit for the hard right and far right.

More of this please. So many of us are descended, or have friends or family descended, from the previous immigration waves (myself included). This is a unifying message; and the minority against welcoming new groups are saying the same as was said about ours.

Let’s also not forget leaving the ECHR could result in UK’s trade deal with the EU being terminated because the convention is written into the 2020 Trade & Co-operation Agreement & would also breach the Good Friday Agreement which requires the Convention be directly enforceable in Northern Ireland
