Well, you know my answer! I prefer the straw, on the grounds that the hempcrete has a high-carbon material (lime) added for no apparent (good) reason. It makes the insulation value worse, and adds embodied emissions. Perplexing.

Well that sounds ominous. Why should our “peace of mind” be affected by a change of administrator? Is there a risk that this information will become unavailable and, if so, shouldn’t you be keeping copies of all the relevant information?

A King Seiko hi-beat? Love it. There is no hope for you now. Wait until you get two automatic watches, then you’ll need an automatic watch winder to keep them both wound.

Thanks, Nick. We’re going to play it safe by standing on high ground overlooking the sea. That should give us a good chance, fog and wildfires notwithstanding.

It was relatively low-tech and so probably not high profit. This perhaps explains why it’s a sadly neglected approach, overdue a revival. sdg21.eu/en/db/solare-nahwaerme-ack…

Nice to see interest in thermal storage, but this shouldn’t be news. 20 years ago in Munich a thermal store was built, using 6000 m³ of water to store around 450MWh of seasonal heat. Integrated into the landscaping, it doubled as a tobogganing hill.

Sorry to be a grump, but does this really tell us why? It seems to tell us that the good language learners have something different about their brains…but we knew that anyway, didn’t we?

@ianwalker.bsky.social Have you done anything on what you might call “aeronormativity”, i.e., the identification of medium/long distance travel with flying? As a non-flyer, I feel I encounter it quite a lot.

The key point, though, is that you avoid all the disadvantages of policymaking by an elected elite (usually an odd, unrepresentative and biddable bunch) that Bouricius outlines so clearly in his short video.

Yes, Guerrero covers this and much else (in exhaustive, philosopher’s detail) in Lottocracy. Essentially it’s sortition all the way down/up — specific committees for ensuring consistency between Single-Issue Legislatures, possibly drawing on some ex-members of those SILs.

The Windy through-wall AC unit was just available at the time. Today, I’d use a less bulky unit, e.g. Panasonic RAC Solo. These will dehumidify as well, and work well with a ducted ASHP hot-water tank like the Nuos, with no external heat exchangers. For larger houses an air-to-water HP is fine.

Thanks, Michael. Yes, all the QBs (1-3), had mechanical heat recovery and ventilation. They were really just (somewhat portable) demonstrations of low-carbon techniques and technologies, so heat pump, MHRV, solar, LEDs, etc. were all important, and included since 2009 (QB1). The earlier models had…

Meant to ask: how is the Dwarf 3 for objects that occupy a smaller portion of the sky, e.g. planets. Is resolution then an issue (i.e. one that can’t be as well compensated by long exposures)?

It’s not bad. It’s set (and was filmed) where B grew up, so has become a bit of a favourite. York, MacCorkindale, Agutter - what more could you want for a Sunday afternoon? The book is very good, if you like derring-do (and can ignore the anachronisms).

@karlwiderquist.bsky.social I thought you’d like this quote from jacobin.com/2022/04/socialist-femin… I’m sure you’re already across it, but I saw it and thought of you.
A quote from Charles Fourier: “Philosophy was right to vaunt liberty; it is the foremost desire of all societies’ creatures. But philosophy forgot that in civilized societies liberty is illusory if the common people lack wealth. When the wage-earning classes are poor, their independence is as fragile as a house without foundations. The free man who lacks wealth immediately sinks back under the yoke of the rich. The newly freed slave takes fright at the need of providing for his own subsistence and hastens to sell himself back into slavery in order to escape this new anxiety that hangs over him like Damocles’ sword.”

Thanks, Aidan. I think that’s right. As long as management behave like a “professional managerial class”, by appearing to defend government against staff rather than staff against government, our mutual interests are catastrophically deemphasised, with the consequences that we see.

I suppose we ought to consider, too, what alternative course of action, might extract the sector from the race-to-the-bottom implied by your three points (of which 3 is, of course, the most galling, as John notes), if strike action were definitively off the table. Ideas?

Mike Page @mikepage.bsky.social · 09/09/2025
…refused to sign up to a collective, sector-wide campaign might actually focus all our minds on the underlying funding issue, common to all. The key problem, I think, is that VC’s are selected for a lack of solidarity with the staff body from which they sprang. Maybe not irredeemably so, though?

Mike Page @mikepage.bsky.social · 09/09/2025
Pragmatically, I think you are right, of course. And yet such a management stance would lack any logic. VCs WANT higher unit funding (some have been v explicit in saying so); between them, they have a monopoly degree-awarding powers. Selective strikes in institutions where the VC…1/2

Mike Page @mikepage.bsky.social · 09/09/2025
But what if a strike were aimed at addressing 2 first, and thence 1? That is, a strike that tried to unite staff and management (yes, inc. VC’s; UUK, etc.) in pushing Gov to increase home-student funding. Along the lines of: No home degrees to be awarded until unit funding somewhat restored.
