i think the funniest fighting game balance change ive ever seen is in the formerly-rare umk3 wavenet rather than removing the base umk3 infinites by nerfing chars, instead they kept them in but added a cap to total moves in a combo. if u try to infinite still, the game makes fun of you, LOOOL

No access to my mic yesterday but I finished that Nana, Saki & Mio boss fight in Grandia: Digital Museum yesterday during a lunch break. Legitimately difficult and required actual strategy early on to prevent them spamming that attack when they circle you and there's explosions and stuff.

Your point about watercooler games etc. I think this is a big stumbling block for gamers, that video games are becoming more like films, TV etc. The ludicrously deep film for film nerds doesn't have the mass appeal of the whiz bang kapow entertain as many people as possible film.
