Something that can't be unseen is the sheer popularity of racism in Australia— there's a massive slab of the electorate who are so deeply, reflexively AND consciously racist that they're perfectly willing to trash the economy, rule of law, and countless people's lives to see racist policies enacted.

This is terrifying — for First Nations kids in particular. Happened to drive past the former Kinchela Aboriginal Boys’ Training Home near Kempsey recently; pulled up to have a look. The shadows around that building were such that I couldn't get out of the car. There are still children buried there.

I think it's his most ambitious book, which is saying something. Massively underrated in Australia, little known elsewhere, but he's the sort of writer who could snag a Nobel.

You could try Henry Goes Bush by Wayne Marshall (who lives in P Carey's home town). Presumably you're across Praiseworthy? Couple of years old now, but Theory & Practice is as good as anything M de Kretser has written. Also couple of years old, Chinese Postman might be Brian Castro's best.

Cartoon.
Scene is women's public toilets. A woman in a shirt saying 'TERF PATROL" is on a ladder peering over a locked door into a cubicle. She's saying "Just checking your genitalia to make sure you're not one of those creepy perverts who lurk in women's toilets"

This is happening at the same time the "affordable housing" thing, riding on a wave of imbecilic credulity thanks to the YIMBY movement, has been revealed as the sham it always was. People have nowhere to go. People have NOWHERE to go.

Gherkin relish. Wilfred Owen with a toothache. That sort of thing was his gear, and he was the best at it.

The Crookes of Epping. His work on Man of Flowers. His writing about Fitzroy footy club in the Melbourne Times. The Ronald Ryan play, and countless weirder little theatre things at La Mama. The instantly recognisable artwork. A genuine one-off.

I wish we were going to more places Kate, but it's a start. No writers ever visited my little town when I was a kid, but I saw Judith Wright speak in a dowdy community centre in Wodonga when I was about 13, and it meant something. Now country teens can vibe on Wayne Marshall goodness!

Yeah, you'd think the program will surely have better representation - not just because it's the right thing, but because First Nations writers are disproportionately responsible for the most interesting writing being published in this place at this time. But it is an inauspicious start.

One Nation and Labor just voted together to double the visa fees for people come to Australia to study, to nearly $5,000. The politics of Labor and One Nation is clear, treating people who come here to be a part of the community as either cash cows or scapegoats.

Hooray for this, but it's a bit astonishing in 2026 that you would have three Australian writers spruiking an overseas OzLit festival and not one is First Nations. Nice flags though.

Thinking about the lack of diversity in news rooms, prominent journalists of colour/migrant backgrounds who've been hounded out, and First Nations journalists who've left due to racism and lack of cultural safety and respect. All of this makes it easier for Hanson.

On this ongoing, relentless nonsense about AI resistance being classist, excellence is one of the few, fragile weapons working class people can deploy against privilege. Destroy excellence, or cheapen it to the point of routine, and you reward access and wealth.
