2nd MRS Early Career Research Virtual Meeting | Metastasis Research
The 2025 MRS Early Career Research Virtual Meeting is a two day meeting aimed at engaging trainees and early career researchers from around the world and highlighting recent advances in metastasis research through keynote presentations, invited talks, panel discussions, and selected talks from abstracts. The meeting is organized and hosted by the Early Career Leadership Council (ECLC) of the MRS. Abstracts are being accepted for consideration for oral presentations. Abstract submission is open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, residents, clinical fellows, and researchers within 3 years of starting their own independent research group. Registration for this meeting is free for MRS Members!

A person made up of jigsaw pieces representing the millions and millions of unique cells with unique genomes, which build a picture of our lifetime of cellular experiences.
Four panels, anticlockwise from top left, highlight key findings. (i) Phylogeny-violating variants (PVVs) caused by persistent DNA lesions explain otherwise ‘impossible’ trees. (ii) An estimate (in chronological time) of when lesions were acquired and for how long they persist. (iii) Demonstration in vivo that individual DNA lesions can give rise to both single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and small insertions or deletions (indels) in different cell cycles; this is a form of multiallelic variation, which more commonly relates to two alternate SNVs at the same site. (iv) Identification of lesion segregation of APOBEC mutagenesis, implicating that genome-wide mutagenesis occurred within a single cell cycle and that lesion segregation could explain the strand coordination of clustered APOBEC mutations commonly seen in cancer genomes.

Top 4 things to know about doing science: 1. You need to have someone you can talk to 2. One-on-one discussions are the best 3. Think about discussions as improvisations and use the ‘yes, and’ rule 4. Create a safe space so both of you feel open to saying seemingly silly things

Lung-resident alveolar macrophages regulate the timing of breast cancer metastasis
We find that when disseminated breast cancer cells enter the lung, embryo-derived alveolar macrophages (AMs) serve as an innate immune barrier to metastasis. This occurs because AMs produce signals that induce dormancy in the cancer cells. As cancer evolves, cancer cells eliminate their ability to sense the AM-derived pro-dormancy signals, developing a mechanism of resistance to this AM-dependent innate immune control of metastasis.
