"Some humans say trees are not sentient beings, but they do not understand poetry—" —Joy Harjo #poem #poems #poetry
Speaking Tree

I had a beautiful dream I was dancing with a tree.
—Sandra Cisneros

Some things on this earth are unspeakable:
Genealogy of the broken—
A shy wind threading leaves after a massacre,
Or the smell of coffee and no one there—

Some humans say trees are not sentient beings,
But they do not understand poetry—

Nor can they hear the singing of trees when they are fed by
Wind, or water music—
Or hear their cries of anguish when they are broken and bereft—

Now I am a woman longing to be a tree, planted in a moist, dark earth
Between sunrise and sunset—

I cannot walk through all realms—
I carry a yearning I cannot bear alone in the dark—

What shall I do with all this heartache?

The deepest-rooted dream of a tree is to walk
Even just a little ways, from the place next to the doorway—
To the edge of the river of life, and drink—

I have heard trees talking, long after the sun has gone down:

Imagine what would it be like to dance close together
In this land of water and knowledge . . .

To drink deep what is undrinkable.

Idk this little four panel comic by Lynda Barry (drawnandquarterly.com) just unexpectedly really got me so here you go
A four panel comic in which a parental dog and their child examine a piece of art. Together they question how to look at art. They expect a sudden revelation and understanding. The child asks to be lifted to see better. In the final panel, we see the parent and mirroring the pose in the framed art, having suddenly found themselves in the art, and in so doing, found their revelation.

We lived in the house of poetry, which was also the house of love and grief; the house of solitude and art; the house of Jane’s depression and my cancers and Jane’s leukemia. Donald Hall

~Maureen Seaton (throwing away all the rules & her work singing) from The Sky is an Elephant (Redacted Books, 2023)
The Sky Is an Elephant

-Jack Spicer, from "Ballad of the Little Girl Who Invented the Universe"
(after Lorca)

Once I was the little girl who invented the universe. I was sad as a chimney without a house.

I didn't mean this to be a poem, but it's building itself and there is nothing I can do to stop it. Truly, try

and stop me. I am sad as a house without a doll. See? A doll without a mouth. A mouth without a smile. (Note

to poet: revise that last part: too glum.) Here's a line
from Spicer or maybe Lorca. (They often share.)

But the sky is an elephant/ and the jasmines are water without blood.
This is sad but it makes me happy, especially the elephant.

I think this poem actually ended somewhere around the doll or the mouth, but I am too sad to fix it,

you know how that feels. So this makebelieve poem
will go on as is, like the moon over the skeleton of a girl.

Little secret is that the poem featured (“Fade Away”) is an excerpt from a very bad ass long poem about music and bands, desire, nostalgia, aging, and more 🎶

I remember the first time I read Nikki Giovanni’s “Allowables” — being overcome by the extraordinary thing she taught me about my own fear, its murderousness. And she did this not by standing above me, but by turning quietly and saying: see what we did?
ALLOWABLES
I killed a spider
Not a murderous brown recluse
Nor even a black widow
And if the truth were told this Was only a small
Sort of papery spider
Who should have run
When I picked up the book
But she didn't
And she scared me And I smashed her
I don't think I'm allowed
To kill something
Because I am
Frightened
