I've avoided reading anything about it but I am so excited for PENGUIN COLONY. I went hoarse recommending Umurangi Generation back in 2020 and failed (but valiantly tried) to get that game to win all the awards over its AAA competitors store.steampowered.com/app/3695930/...

If you’ve got kids studying in Dunedin who aren’t yet enrolled to vote, encourage them to get along to this all ages, alcohol free, voter enrolment music festival. Loads of really great bands in the lineup! (Yes including my kid, but genuinely, lots of great talent.) #nzpol

Journalists are crowing 'what's new?!' because they have forgotten that there is a second draft of history, and don't seem to recognise that a book like this, is it. This govt has literally forced the TPU into the *school curriculum* in its ideological vandalism, well here's the primary reference.

Business financial data day - always a favourite. What's going on? TLDR: Profits pick-up, wages don't. I'll get into the glorious detail, but concepts first... 'NZ Businesses' buy stuff, pay wages, sell stuff, and make profits. Per capita figures for the above in the chart, simple? Right... [🧵 1/n]

You cannot believe climate science and hold this position; this is madness. It's climate denier policy. What has become of Labour? They bear no resemblance to the party of 2020. #nzpol

I knew this would be bad, but it's awful. Malpractice even. I'll limit my criticism to 9 posts. The Herald have added together the gross debt of NZ public & private sectors and called this debt 'we collectively owe the world'. Pure unadulterated nonsense. Literally untrue. [🧵1/n]

I assume it's based on the assumption that it will maximise their chance of getting into parliament. But you're right that it's naïve. I maintain that, whatever it is, it's a perverse thing to commit to.

Here's the thing. LGNZ was a somewhat effective lobbying platform that acted as a bulwark against the things he's complained about. But he destroyed LGNZ by pulling Auckland out of it. He deserves a big share of the blame for exactly what he's complaining about.

Entirely consistent imo! Three waters is offensive to them because it's taxpayer money, Tiaki Wai because it's ratepayer money; they're only interested in full privatisation. The actual cost doesn't matter — in fact the higher the better — as long as it's lining the pockets of some rich ghoul.

Simply cut staffing numbers! Reduce budgets! Cut the unnecessary spending! Buddy you do realise Councils have plans and annual reports audited every three years and every year respectively. You realise staff deliver services. Budgets pay for facilities. Or don't you? Maybe they don't.

Rates capping is possibly the most harmful piece of legislation this government will pass in terms of massive austerity and assets sales across the country. And it has gone more or less unreported because of our spectacular national apathy — & antipathy — towards local government. #nzpol

I don't have any specific beef with it (I use it!), it's just an example to illustrate that the ban won't be effective in keeping minors off social media. Discord effectively operates as a social media platform, has had a large number of grooming/predator scandals, and has a very young userbase.

Here's what I wrote to every Labour MP about the social media ban. The easiest way to email them all is to go to the link below, and cut and paste their email addresses from the pdf - it saves a lot of time. www3.parliament.nz/media/12194/...
Hello Labour caucus,

A few months back I wrote each of you, and every MP in Parliament, an individual email about the awful NZ First anti-trans legislation. Thank you to each of you who offered a personal response to that, it afforded comfort at a time of worry.

Today you launched your new campaign slogan, Better Starts Now.

Tomorrow you’re meeting to discuss whether or not to support National’s social media ban for under-16’s - and it is just National’s social media ban - nobody else wants a bar of it. They’ve dropped this so late, having denied anyone else a look, in the hope they can rush it through.

The proposed social media ban won’t work. You can look across the Tasman at how Australia’s ban has not worked, or in the UK and see how their ban has not worked. National’s proposal doesn’t include Roblox which MPs who are parents will shudder at, because of how obsessive it is - but also because it’s a platform that takes almost no action on predatory behaviour

This bill will end up being a big data-gathering obstacle to everyone using the internet, as various verifications and requirements and additional steps make it more difficult to gain access to the online world - and as has been said, won’t actually protect young people.
I’d also argue that the internet, and social media in particular, has done far more damage to Gen X and Boomers than it has to young people - I mean, have you seen the facebook comment section recently? It makes the flashes of hell in Event Horizon (1997) look like walk along the beach at sunset with someone you love

If better starts now, I hope that means - now. A last minute ham-fisted bit of legislation that doesn’t work from the lead partner of a coalition government whose calling card is legislation that’s done too quickly, had poor scrutiny, and doesn’t work - that isn’t better.

Call them on it. Commit to developing cross-party regulation for social media platforms that focuses on harm reduction, consequences for hosts of harmful content or inaction on predatory behaviour.

Go full noise, emphasise that Labour would do it differently, take their time, give it the prioritisation online safety requires. In short, do it better - because I hear it starts now

Thanks for reading,

Johnny Cans

They both function as big unregulated public chatrooms, basically, and have notoriously developed grooming/sexual predator issues. They're also widely used by minors.

Yeah absolutely, everyone will need some proof of age — though meta has bandied about some notions of "facial age estimation". I do wonder if this will accelerate or decelerate the echo-chamberisation of fb especially.

Mickey @mickeytreadwell.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I suspect it's just electoralism — they're guessing it's a vote-winner based on the putcomes from prior trials. It will be interesting to see how the cooker vote reacts to Meta's demand for photo ID.

Without being too uncharitable (hopefully), I think this illustrates a big difference between Labour and the Greens. Labour believes the way we've been managing the economy for the past 40 years is fundamentally sound and salvageable. The Greens do not.
