A journal cover page for "An analytical heterogeneous agent macro model of concentration, markups, and falling labour shares" by Karsten Kohler, Jo Michell and Ayoze Alfageme, published in the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.

The abstract text is: This paper presents an analytical heterogeneous agent model (HAM) to explore micro-level concentration dynamics and their effects on macro-level distribution and growth. It contributes to recent work on macroeconomic agent-based models (ABMs) by comparing a small-scale ABM with bilateral firm-customer matching to a simplified HAM without direct agent interactions. The HAM replicates key ABM results while allowing for analytical solutions. In the model, larger firms benefit from lower unit costs due to economies of scale, gain larger market shares, and set higher markups. More profitable firms temporarily grow faster, leading to endogenous changes in the firm size distribution. The resulting right-skewed distributions create a divergence between the average profit share across firms and the aggregate profit share, which is driven by the largest firms. The decline in the labour share reduces aggregate consumption and slows growth. Despite its simplicity, the model captures key empirical patterns related to superstar firms and declining labour shares.

New paper (for SASE 2026 Book Salon on Marieke Beck’s Extroverted Financialisation) “How liability management destabilized the banking system and now prevents banks from performing their core economic function” thread 1/26
Abstract: Starting in the 1960s US regulators permitted banks to compete for wholesale funding and engage in liability management in an environment where limits on bank competition were considered “financial repression.” By 1974 the predictable instability generated by this regulatory approach resulted in a US bailout of wholesale funding markets and a policy that is now known as “too big to fail.” Unfortunately the predictable structural instability that has resulted from a government backstop of banks that engage regularly and repeatedly in bad lending is not the worst consequence of this misguided regulation. Liability management has resulted in a complete restructuring of the lending behavior of the banking system. Banking systems were founded centuries ago to allow the expansion of the money supply to fund low-cost working capital loans that would facilitate economic growth by making transactions easier to complete and less likely to be prevented by financing constraints alone. Now banks use their ability to expand the money supply to make loans that are explicitly designed to be relatively high cost for borrowers – in order to provide safety and yield for the banks. In short, liability management has so transformed the banking system that it no longer functions.

Who are the crypto bros? The amazing Izaura Solipa crunched the data. Short answer: Crypto bros share the same privileged traits, educational credentials, and institutional access that characterize elites in 'traditional' Wall Street segments. Just out in SER: academic.oup.com/ser/advance-...
Title and Abstract of the linked paper:

New finance, old structures: cryptocurrencies and the reproduction of financial elites in the USA

Crypto research highlights the anarcho-libertarian feature of the crypto movement, characterizing the industry as a radical departure from governmental and corporate influence. This study investigates the characteristics of the US crypto elite, highlighting how the demographic structure and the institutional connections of the industry resemble those of the established financial elite. Drawing on original data from board members of top US crypto and financial firms, Fortune 1000 companies, and major policy-planning organizations, it develops three comparisons. Results show that crypto elites share similar socio-educational traits with traditional finance leaders and engage with powerful corporate and political affiliations, despite being more peripheral in corporate networks—likely due to the sector’s recent emergence. Notably, the White House appears in the career paths of both groups, suggesting a shared pattern of revolving door integration into state structures. Rather than a structural transformation, crypto appears to align with the broader elite configuration of the US political economy.
