BUTT WELDIN’ Or one of the ghostly figures stepping into the street
Crop of the original post photo showing a person walking along a sidewalk under a “Blacksmithing” sign hanging off a building. The building’s brick wall is painted with some indistinguishable words but the clearest text reads “BUTT WELDIN”

So neither told me to drive on the trail but Apple‘s visual communication for “you need to walk to the destination” is terrible.

Love when the protected bike lane disappears for a loading zone/hotel valet spot and then turns into a pedestrian walkway around sidewalk construction. Washington east of Dearborn as always

Wait we are enforcing these now? Not just the red bus lanes? Because I genuinely thought the city gave up on those ineffective plain bus lanes (Clark south of Diversey and Cortland by the river are other examples but outside of the pilot zone)

I see what you mean... I don't think it's in the right spot anyway, but you can see in this rendering (sans metal poles) how the bike lane paint doesn't go all the way to the edge of the curved curb because there are trees planted in the space between the bike lane and traffic to the right.

How can CDOT can argue multiple pedestrian and cyclist injuries and a fatality are “typical” in any way? Callous engineer speak. I’ve also never seen a crash analysis that doesn’t bother with injury severity and identifying fatalities, which they missed. This is sloppy and hard to take seriously.

• Inner Lake Shore Dr. - Grace Street to
Belmont Avenue • Crash history typical for a corridor of this
type
• Pedestrian & Pedal Cyclist Crashes
• 9 crashes involving pedestrians

New bump outs at Estes and Bell across from Armstrong Elementary. I’ve heard my frmr CFD battalion chief grandpa used to sit on that porch and either yell at cars to slow down or take down plate numbers of stop sign scofflaws. I think he would have appreciated this @andrefor40th.bsky.social!

They did link to a report. 43% of the 412 sampled. I’m guessing that sample is not actually representative of all national consumers and they didn’t do anything to adjust it
Screenshot of a survey report. Percentage of sample
56% Do not own an e-bike
28% Own 1 e-bike
15% Own 2 or more e-bikes

A majority of American consumers (56%) do not own an e-bike, but over a
quarter own 1 e-bike and one in seven own 2 e-bikes or more.
Data from representative sample of US adult consumers, n = 412

Percentage intention to purchase
I'm planning to purchase an e-bike 6%
I have considered purchasing an e-bike 46%
I have no intention of purchasing an e-bike 48%
Just over one in twenty consumers already plan to purchase an e-bike, while nearly half of consumers have considered purchasing an e-bike.

For all the gripes about poor snow removal from protected bike lanes, I haven’t heard of any problems with regular plows and raised crosswalks. This is on Ravenswood at Berwyn Monday night.
Nighttime photo of a raised crosswalk across Ravenswood at Berwyn leading into a tunnel under the UP-N Metra railroad embankment. Accumulated snow is visible on most surfaces and around sidewalks but plows have cleared the street and the raised crosswalk down to pavement.

Notably, AASHTO guide now tells engineers to design for the “interested but concerned” cyclists rather than those who are highly confident. This is related to research showing sharrows are sometimes less safe than nothing, this pushes more comfort and connections.
Graphic showing 4 types of cyclists with varying levels of comfort on the road.

Non-Bicyclist: Uncomfortable bicycling in any condition, have no interest in bicycling, or are physically unable to
bicycle.

Interested but Concerned: Often not comfortable with bike lanes, may bike on sidewalks even if bike lanes are provided; prefer off-street or separate bicycle facilities or quiet
or traffic-calmed residential roads. May not bike at all if bicycle facilities do not meet needs for perceived
comfort.

Somewhat confident: Generally prefer more separated facilities, but are comfortable riding in bicycle lanes or on paved
shoulders if need be.

Highly confident: Comfortable riding with traffic, will use roads
without bike lanes.
