Tired: K01 and AHA Career Development Award plus groveling to industry and/or philanthropy. Wired: I submit 2–3 long-shot parlays every week on Kalshi, hoping that something hits. Wonder where the odds are more favorable 🫪🫪🫪

Free people from “medical tyranny” certainly is an interesting message… Medicine is classically a field that is only bound by information. I’m sure “super intelligence” in its current form will save us!

Other thing that’s insane about this stuff is “protecting” girls doesn’t involve things like I dunno… Pay equity and investment in women’s sports, services at school, supporting their tired parents, etc. Exhausting rhetoric!

Man what do yall got going on over on the West coast??
Some of their disputes were related to business and strategy decisions, but others seemed more like ethical lapses to Amodei.
Altman, for example, had met Kanye West and offered to let him into the GPT-3 private beta in 2020, according to two people familiar with the offer. Jack Clark, OpenAl's policy director, quashed the idea, pointing out that West had recently posted a video that seemed to show himself urinating on a Grammy award and appeared to be mentally unstable. (This was before the period in which West began to publicly express admiration for Hitler.)

Tooting my own horn here, this is what I was getting at in my essay from last month. Yes, there’s a lot of cool ~theoretical~ applications of AI in healthcare. Long term I’m sure many of those could be great. In the interim…

Study from Blue Cross Blue Shield indicates that using AI is increasing billing for hospital systems. Most of those costs are coming from increased secondary diagnosis. Costs going up for patients and consumers, not exactly what people were looking for! www.bcbs.com/about-us/ass...

Lmao no, it’s people who are just copy-pasting thoughts from AI to others. Simply a vessel to spew AI slop out into the world with no original thoughts.

those people in that camp (ppl who are against AI use because they have a strong conviction about how they describe their reasoning) to be more involved in the convo. Similarly I’m happy you shared your experience of where AI is clearly helping your work while not flooding the world with slop.

The anti-AI folks (I think) have a pocket of the group who will be big winners. Especially students. This is mainly b/c I’m skeptical that “AI-native training” is a thing that translates well across a lot of disciplines. I trust people who are great thinkers to pick up AI later. Wld luv 2 see…

please please please please do not be a meat proxy. I have more lenience with students and trainees around this because they are figuring out things. For established folks, do you really think that offloading your thinking to whatever version of Claude or ChatGPT we are on is sustainable?

imo debates around AI use are often not nuanced. Usually 2 diametrically opposed views in a standoff as we all navigate our slop filled world. I also find myself reading less because of the sheer volume of nonsense I come across. Incentives and culture around this need to change. @stephenturner.us

Wonder what’s the right way to realign incentives to stop this (especially in medicine)? Ppl are still evaluating students, job candidates, etc. by output volume and journal “quality”. Personally don’t think it’s gonna change until there’s a push for evaluating ppl on a very narrow output.

“1st, rather than cut NIH by nearly 40 percent, as the OMB proposed last year, we should double its $48 billion budget within five years. These are big numbers, but if they yield discoveries that trim the nation’s $5.3 trillion health bill by just 1 percent, they will more than pay for themselves.”

The secretary's office has a large pot of discretionary money that it could have tapped for the cost, those people said. HHS cut $12 million from the minority health office, rather than just the $7 million that represented increased security costs, in part because the secretary's office has been subject to across-the-board budget cuts, those people said.

Hmmm so now the WH (known truth tellers) are saying this dispute did not happen, and JB + NIH folks don’t have comments to provide. When there’s smoke there’s fire!
A White House official has denied the reports of a blow-up in the Oval Office as
"baseless speculation.""The Trump administration remains committed to the core mission of the NIH," the official said in an unsigned statement.
Neither Bhattacharya nor NIH responded to requests for comment from STAT.

One of my largest gripes with leaders in this moment is where is the evidence that supports claims around the “war on science” subsiding? You tell your students, staff, and faculty to put their heads down and stay the course as the future of their field and work are being undermined. Maddening!
