I spend a lot of time thinking about how women use the internet, how the internet and technology are used against us, and the cultural, political impacts of the internet. Here I'm talking about why women love to snoop online for my internet diary. open.substack.com/pub/michaela...

Dolly Parton on Hannah Montana is one of my core childhood memories and I absolutely loved her appearances and also the way my mum used to laugh when I asked her if she knew who Dolly Parton was. She was such a magical person.

Look, put simply, people should not be comfortable saying that in public and the way to fix society runs directly through making them afraid to say it again.

Jason was one of the very few to use his work to ask 'hey why is this actually news?' and he wrote, as he always does, with great sensitivity and clarity.

FFS, You don’t even have to look *outside Cambridge* for examples of white professors who have behaved far, far worse and not only kept their jobs, but have been protected and celebrated by both their institution and the media.

I'm actively seething. I actually feel sick. None of this actually needed to happen and a whole sector of press and academia who were more upset than Jason Arday was Black than anything else will not reflect on themselves.

Michaela Makusha @michaelamakusha.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
The whole Jason Arday situation did not need to be national news. Sure, bemusing but it's not national news, but a way to find some symbol of 'DEI' to destroy. We know there will be no introspection.

Yes, it's wrong but considering Jeffery Archer is still out and about and writing books and doing commentary, I think we'll all be fine. the problem is that this will be used to delegitimise whole careers and areas of studies, which is likely the true goal.

Right wingers trying to use the Jason Arday situation as 'proof' that DEI has failed when no, it's actually more proof that if you sound impressive enough, elite institutions will overlook so much. This has happened for years and it's never national news.

Reducing characters to tropes and screen time is lazy and using black best friend to describe Himesh Patel's Eurylochus is insane and he is Asian, mind you. I think some grievances say more about the person who has them as opposed to what they are seeing.

this part in emily wilson's critique threw me. everyone who is not odysseus is a plot device in some way to serve his narrative. to flatten these characters down to how much screen time they have or tropes incorrectly is wild. I respect wilson's critique as I love the film but this is wild.

Re the Emily Wilson discourse - her Dad (A N Wilson) was the king of literary feuds. A good family tradition. Best one was his feud with Bevis Hillier who hoaxed him into including a fake letter in his biography of Bejteman where the first letter of each sentence spelt "AN Wilson is a shit".
