Anyway. I don't have a very satisfying point here. In the whack-a-mole game of retracting bad papers, the number of mallets has stayed pretty much constant, but the number of moles has, for very obvious reasons, increased a thousandfold.

I was reminded of another paper, which could have benefited from a hefty dose of No but which was instead abetted by not just one sycophantic chatbot but four of them that give the crankery a superficial gloss. diagrammonkey.wordpress.com/2026/03/12/n...

For all its faults, this paper was written by a human but the age of hand-crafted nonsense is drawing to a close. The new age of computer-assisted drivel is upon us, the flow of nonsense swelling from a trickle to a flood.

I just googled the paper and the AI summary - the very first thing that appears - doesn't mention the retraction or that the vast preponderance of science - and not just climate science - is against it.

So much of science is being told no - by yourself, friends, peers, random people on the street, even (and most importantly) reality itself - that when that chain of nope breaks, things like this happen and there's no good in it.

Somewhere in the process of writing, reviewing, editing, publication and subsequent publicisation, someone could have expended a tiny amount of discretion and intervened. But they didn't.

Elsewhere, the author has the earth rotating the wrong way, confuses ice caps with ocean currents (I think, it's hard to tell), and the citations are sometimes spectacularly approximate. I could go on.

My blogpost could have been much longer. Every time I look at the paper, I spot another error. I opened it just now, closed my eyes, span the mouse wheel and spot checked the first fact my reopened eye lighted upon: "Water has a very high heat capacity (4.187 mJ/m³ K)" milli/mega pfft

Ok comms gurus… if we’re talking about ocean heat content and earth’s energy imbalance which units are preferable: ZJ and ZJ per year or W/m²year and W/m². Or something else. Or putting everything in terms of some energy equivalent like how much energy humans use each year.

I’ve updated the long-running (starts 1866) CRU Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). This lets us compare the currently developing El Niño with earlier events including 1877-78. 2026 has developed very quickly, similar to the 1997-98 one. Thick line is 3-month running mean, with y-axis reversed.
1866-present timeseries of Climatic Research Unit SOI with some major El Niño events marked.

There’s often a strong “hell today for heaven tomorrow” vibe from the techbros. The problem being, of course, that it’s *always* today and they aren’t the people experiencing the hell.

New version of the HadCRUT global temperature dataset released @colinmorice.bsky.social HadCRUT5.2 uses HadSST4.2 (with improved adjustments for SST biases during 1933-1961) and CRUTEM5.2 (with updates to stations in China, USA and Canada). Here is the difference from the previous version 5.1

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

A hand holds up a nearly-empty coffee cup, showing grounds at the bottom. They form a shape resembling a weird deep-sea fish with long fangs and one enormous eye.
