When Patrick Healy, an NYT assistant managing editor, asked me to do a video interview for the Times’ new “Sound Off” feature, he cited this Bluesky post of mine. In the interview, I said their soft treatment of Karoline Leavitt was a case of the Times “awarding her style points” as a fascist liar.

In my Stop the Presses newsletter a few months ago, I used a hurricane metaphor to explain why it’s wrong for major media to report on Trump’s authoritarian symptoms but not diagnose the disease. www.stopthepresses.news/p/the-media-...
Imagine a hurricane approaching the coast. News organizations report that winds are increasing, heavy rain is starting to fall, barometric pressure is dropping, people are being urged to evacuate and shop owners are boarding up their windows. But the news outlets carefully avoid using the word “hurricane.”

They might tell themselves, “We said there was a big storm coming and people were urged to leave. Everyone should have figured out it was a hurricane.”

But that’s not human nature. It’s human nature to think, “We can ride this out. It’s a big storm – but it’s not a hurricane.”

This morning I re-watched my video argument with the NY Times' Patrick Healy, and it's clear that the Times believes if it says explicity that the Trump regime is assaulting democracy, that would undermine its work to investigate how the regime is assaulting democracy. What an absurd position.

"Democracy dies unless Maggie Haberman has access to senior Trump aides and McConnell/Romney Republicans respect us" is essentially the argument Times editors have been making since 2018. I can't tell if they actually believe that or it's a pretext for their decision not to change their approach.

Based on their public comments, NYT leaders view the kind of insider details discovered by Haberman and others as essential to understanding Trump. I don't think that's correct. Public documents (Project 2025) and events (Jan 6, DOGE) to me describe this presidency better than insider accounts.

NYT editors describe this tension between reporting on Trump and describing Trump frankly that I don't think exists. There is a real tension at play though: Describing American politics in 2026 directly versus being viewed as neutral and not being hated by Republicans.

To illustrate this with another beat, some of the reporting that the NYT has done on Alito and Roberts in particular has been groundbreaking. But the paper's day-to-day coverage of the Court does not capture how much of a role it has played in America becoming a competitive authoritarian nation.

💥NEW FOIA Files newsletter is out! TONS of NEWS DOJ & FBI emails I obtained reveal how federal investigators probed allegations in 2022 that President Donald Trump tore up presidential records & why a prosecutor declined to pursue a separate criminal investigation www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
An email from NARA's OIG to DOJ's public integrity prosecutor in 2022.

I just wanted to close the loop on our end with this. My office completed a preliminary inquiry into the matter of the torn records from the Trump Administration and found that:
1. In June 2018, NARA warned the Trump Administration that the practice of tearing records was not permissible. The Trump Administration provided assurances that it would stop. In approximately March or April 2021, NARA determined that the practice had continued through the end of the administration.
2. From the very limited number of Trump Administration records reviewed by NARA pursuant to special access requests, only a very small quantity were torn.
3. Both classified (secret and top secret) and unclassified records were torn (including two partially torn records found in the 15 boxes retrieved from Mar-a-Lago).
4. The nature of the tears varied from partial, halves, quarters, and smaller pieces. However, no records were torn in a way that they were not able to be realigned and put back together.
5. Some torn records were taped back together, while others were placed in their multiple pieces and intermingled in accordion folders.
6 pra practice did not seem to follow a rhyme or reason, and did not appear to be a discriminant
7. There is no way for NARA to know who exactly tore the records, but it is implied by how the records were labeled and some records were attributed to President Trump, and recently one box containing torn records was attributed to Matthew Sheehan, former Deputy Counsel to Vice President Mike Pence.
8. As a side note, classified records were found intermingled with the unclassified records and isolated as necessary for proper handling.
Please let me know if given this additional information, this is a matter that PIN is interested in.
