Interesting thing about that, from an Australian perspective, is that then Attorney-General Robert Menzies toured Nazi Germany the following year, a few months before Kristallnacht; spoke highly of Herr Hitler on his return. He first became Prime Minister in December 1939.

Having a human rights charter that parliament cannot simply override is a good start. Both major parties in Australia suspended the Racial Discrimination Act, so they could discriminate against Indigenous people. They also compelled Indigenous people to vote for them.
