"Canadian businesses are immensely profitable ... Those profits are also at record levels relative to GDP:" Seems remarkable given the supposed lack of a "business-friendly" government in Ottawa for the last decade. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Innovate? In this economy? With these profit margins?
It is time we realized how far extraction and innovation stand in opposition to each other.

Great name choice. The last Pope Leo, the 13th, was known as a pope for workers and the poor. In Rerum novarum he emphasized the rights of workers to form unions and earn good wages long before these were mainstream positions in the United States.

He's being disrespectful to veterans in a variety of ways, but the thing that really gets me is Veterans Day started out as "Armistice Day." It was explicitly about peace, never "victory." They were celebrating the fact that the war was over, not that it was won.

Hey, the NDP haven’t done much to advocate for social democratic solutions either. Mulcair’s influence still seems to loom over the party policy wise. I hope that changes.

He’s talking about a new crown Corp essentially to build the homes as well. I’d say it’s a mix of market and non-market policy solutions. No way the conservatives would ever suggest to start a home building entity owned by the gov.

The Conservative plan is out and, ooof, is this costing a disaster. There's a whole bunch of phantom revenues booked here, and the GST housing pledge is costed at under $2B. Given their proposed eligibility criteria, it should be more in the 4-6B range.

A good set of facts and arguments to have on hand when someone pulls out that "but our per capita GDP is shrinking!"...

Why GDP per capita doesn’t measure Canada’s true economic health
GDP per capita distorts Canada’s economic story. Population growth and inequality skew the numbers – and the policy conversation.

Because while a zero debt to GDP ratio isn't a particular goal in itself*, and although I accept line graphs don't need to start at zero, I do think that plus a bit of history is helpful in some cases. * Given which I don't see why a constantly declining debt to GDP ratio should be a policy goal.

These polls are pretty inaccurate. We had one telling us in Vernon to vote ndp 2 elections ago and the Liberal candidate was by far the strongest progressive and came second. A lot of people I spoke to, mistakenly switched their vote.

It’s not about saving money. The U.S. doesn’t have a spending problem, a debt problem, or a deficit problem. What we have is a wealth inequality problem—and DOGE is designed to make that real issue way worse. It’s a con. The entire point is to defang government and insulate wealth from democracy.

You’re one of my favourite economists btw. I guess I see gov’t $ differently. If we see gov’t spending as constrained by bond sales then it fuels the need for supply side policies. Victory bonds were an incentive to save and ensured $ went to war effort and didn’t spike demand in other industries.

The Canadian infrastructure bank and social impact bonds are weak attempt at solving a problem that doesn’t exist - a scarcity of gov’t dollars. As Keynes said, we can afford anything we can actually do.

Mike Fotheringham @mfother.bsky.social · 07/04/2025
The fact that the bank of Canada buys its own bonds tells you that selling in the first place is not a necessity but rather a policy choice. It’s more to pull extra dollars out of the economy that would otherwise circulate leading to possible inflation.

Mike Fotheringham @mfother.bsky.social · 07/04/2025
The gov’t can simply spend dollars into creation and doesn’t need our money. Whoever receives those dollars uses them like every other $. The growth is a separate issue but comes in part from the interest on the bond which is a policy choice and effectively a no-risk transfer to the recipient.

If you’re leading with tax cuts you’ve already lost. Democrats should stand for a functional, responsive government, a generous safety net, and modernized public services. Tax cuts is Reagan bullshit. It’s not what you pay. It’s what you get back.
