I have to believe that we'll get through the slop phase and advance the profession, but it will take time and a new group of Grady-like to step up

Anthropic boasts of being "profitable" by using a definition that ignores the billions spent on model training. The push to slow down the pace of AI helps their balance sheet. If they tap the brakes, the short shelf-life of current models extends, allowing them to cash in on existing tech.

As I’ve been explaining: the mega-VCs can now sell their investment in a company to *another one of their own funds*, and capture the increase in valuation between rounds on their books—even if the company they invested in has never had any products, revenues or profits. anildash.com/2026/09/02/c...

We are projected to spend $268 BILLION on deportations — costing the average American taxpayer about $2,358 (according to @epi.org). But somehow we “can’t afford” to make sure hungry children can eat or ensure everyone, no matter their income, can access healthcare. Priorities.

Get good at the core parts — context, intent, generation, review. Using them won't create business value on its own, but it's a baseline. Value is created when people decide what to build, drive the intent, and understand the output.

If developer-steered agentic coding isn't reliably producing work you'd actually ship, then "dark factories" and "features in a day" are fantasies.

“Nobody is losing control of an emerging intelligence. They’re redirecting their own agency to the thing they are building.” It’s a myth, a self-affirming form of sense making: they take the action to build it, but insist on describing it as if they are passive witnesses to an inevitable force.

Whenever a frontier lab AI CEO says that AGI will create a utopia, I play out the following thought experiment; imagine the Trump administration had a computer that could answer any question correctly. Would that world be a utopia? Is the lack of AGI what prevents our world from being a utopia?

Claude Code’s lead developer interviewed Spotify’s VP of Engineering, Niklas Gustavsson, about how they use Claude. He said Spotify does 4,500 production deployments a day and 73% of PRs are now AI-assisted. At a point stats are meaningless. I can’t recall 4 features Spotify has shipped this year

What we saw: A 2× floor on delivery for committed milestones, with high-pattern work like migrations and refactors compressing much further. An appetite to take on work that would have been avoided before, because the cost of trying had dropped enough to make it worth attempting.

In April, I realized we'd crossed a threshold. Teams across our engineering org weren't just using coding agents in daily work, they had redesigned their operating models around them. Different teams, different shapes, but real changes to sprints, rituals, and how work flowed.

Software development is mostly a sociotechnical endeavor, and a successful agentic transformation has everything to do with the people and culture. Most of what's written on the topic focuses on the tools, or worse, the hype. I wanted something more grounded. starkravingfinkle.org/guides/agent...

This post covers: • Why agents with fewer choices produce better code • Durable vs. disposable code distinction matters • Spec-driven development is a feedback loop, not a one-shot pipeline • A pattern for using agents to extend platform SDKs to new stacks starkravingfinkle.org/posts/2026/0...

Coding Agents Don't Replace Platforms — They Make Them More Important
The rise of coding agents hasn't eliminated the need for platform engineering. If anything, it's made building blocks, guardrails, and durable systems more critical than ever.

Mark Finkle @mfinkle.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
Plus, agents actually perform better with constraints. Give them a curated set of components and clear specs, and the output quality goes way up. Give them a blank canvas, and you get AI slop.

Mark Finkle @mfinkle.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
"Code is free now, so why invest in platforms?" I keep hearing this and I keep disagreeing. A platform of durable building blocks doesn't just speed up the first version, it reduces the maintenance burden across everything built on top of it.

Agentic Coding: Who Will Review All That Code?

* Will we have enough capacity to review the code? * Will the reviews be good enough to catch defects? Before we blindly jump into finding ways to review all that code, let's consider the act of reviewing code — and what parts yield the most value and require people.

Mark Finkle @mfinkle.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
Agentic coding creates opportunities and challenges to our existing ways of building software. Code reviews are one of the many topics to consider: Agents write a lot of code -> People need to review that code

True. There are ways to run locally and share the code, but there's still some friction to use your app via mobile and out of the house.

Hyper-local software: Apps built for an audience of one person, one team, or one community. Too specific to survive as a SaaS product, but genuinely useful to the people who build them.

Mark Finkle @mfinkle.bsky.social · 25/02/2026
SaaS solves problems for millions of users, but doesn't fitting any one of them well. Agentic coding changes the equation. It's faster to build what you need than use a tool that mostly works. "SaaS is dead" misses the point.
