Remarkable evolution of Hurricane Polo over the past 48 hours as it fluctuated between category 4 and 5 intensity during an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC) and subsequently re-strengthened to 180 mph (155 kt) as of the latest NHC advisory.

Indeed. “Forecasting where weather systems are headed rather than simply assessing where they are” is literally the job of the NWS, and they are exceedingly good at it.

Hurricane Polo's rapid intensification is seriously impressive... A special 19Z update was issued by the NHC stating that reconnaissance aircraft found that Polo's central pressure is sitting at 892 mb, the 2nd strongest EPAC hurricane by pressure only behind Hurricane Patricia (2015; 872 mb).

This is a widespread problem, and not just in the tech sector. People with success and expertise in one area assuming that makes them experts in another, if they are even aware of it’s existence to begin with. We need to encourage a more well-rounded education in higher ed, along with humility.

I can all but guarantee you the NWS would rather not have to do this, but they are a federal agency and have little choice in the matter. Boycotting them will accomplish nothing. The career forecasters in the NWS are the best in the world and deserve our support until we can move past this nonsense.

In any case, I totally agree that AI agents do not have a will of their own or personalities. What they do, they do because they have been trained on human communications. But they don't need to have these qualities to be dangerous in proportion to their capability, if not handled carefully.

Dan Dawson @meteodan.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I speak here from experience using several generations of AI agents for coding. Of course it makes mistakes and has flaws. Of course you should check it. It is still the case that the accuracy and capability of these models has improved by leaps and bounds, certainly faster than I imagined.

The N-S millenium problem is not something that can be solved by a mere regurgitating souped-up Google bot. This doesn’t mean that Skynet is imminent and we are all going to die, but it does mean that things are accelerating in ways both exciting and concerning. This cannot be dismissed so easily.

This is just not true. If you’ve actually been using them for anything other than as a search engine replacement, you would see just how dramatically they have improved in their capabilities for complex tasks, especially coding. Just in the last few months, let alone years…

It has helped me make progress on some projects that—until now—I only ever could dream I would be able to make the time for even starting. Used appropriately, I firmly believe they can be a huge boon to the day-to-day work of science. But, with great power comes great responsibility.

Well worth a read. Kelton’s experience with and nuanced approach to AI-assisted coding largely mirrors my own. A huge part of me that feels like the advent of the latest generation of AI coding agents is exactly the “spare brain” my single ADHD-addled one has been looking for for so long.

For incompressible flow, to conserve mass, radially inward motion into a vortex must be compensated by axial stretching like this. Nothing exotic on the face of it, but it seems OpenAI claims that the N-S eqns permit the development of a singularity for at least some flows like this.

Today's FORTRAN tip. When editing IF statements, make sure that you don't add "THEN" to what is actually a *logical* IF statement with a continuation "&", so that it *looks* like it should be a standard block IF (i.e. IF-THEN-ENDIF). Confused the hell out of me, the compiler, *and* an AI agent.

Want to see how smoke affects temperatures without seeing any temperatures? Away from the thicker smoke, enough sun came through to warm up the ground to create cumulus clouds (and even storms). But areas with thicker smoke weren't as warm, and so those puffy clouds didn't form.
