A good case from @dickpolman.bsky.social that this man’s selfish short-sightedness set us on path to where we are today. Excruciating insights on the wreckage of a legacy. dickpolman.substack.com/p/ralph-nade...

Ralph Nader is still a pariah. He deserves to be.

Tilting the ‘00 race to Bush was his original sin. We’re still suffering the consequences.

The "social contagion" thing drives me screaming angry. When I was young I had no clue trans ppl existed. I'd never met anyone trans. I saw cruel caricatures in pop culture occasionally. When I realized trans was a thing someone could be, it hit like a lightning bolt. My life felt newly possible.

I don't enjoy writing a negative review at all either. To give you an idea of where I'm at numbers-wise, I have 50+ reviews, and a feedback ratio of around 79% right now. Over 4-5 years I think? It used to be higher, but I've let it fall by the wayside a little over the last little while.

120

meshell @meshell.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

But then other times, I get declined. I mostly only review books I have a high expectation I'll like, so my reviews tend to all be reasonably positive for better or worse. I'm not sure if that plays into it, but it might.

110

meshell @meshell.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

It depends on the books and the authours I think. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. My review rate was reasonably high at one point so I think that helped me get more books I wanted to read. Sometimes the publisher/reps just send me an invite for new books from authours I've reviewed.

Every week I make slides for my BirdNerds class, and the past few weeks, I haven't really been getting a chance to actually complete them. We've been nerding out over birds too much - which is genuinely awesome. Hopefully everyone else has been enjoying that too.

we could solve the western water crisis overnight by simply charging alfalfa farmers market rates for water

Across the basin, alfalfa hay uses more than 5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water — that's 26% of all the water consumed in the basin. One acre-foot roughly equals the annual water use of two or three households.
In the Upper Basin, irrigated agriculture consumes 2.8 million acre-feet, or nearly half the water used by Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, the environment, reservoirs and water exports out of the basin. Cattle-feed crops, like alfalfa, consume 90% of all water used by Upper Basin agriculture.
That means alfalfa uses more water than cities, commercial users and industries across the entire basin:
Collectively, these users consume about 3.5 million acre-feet, or 18%, of the river's water. The Colorado River
