Somehow all these models of our future assume that there is some OTHER group of very highly trained, insightful individuals who function as an underclass that will somehow be satisfied with endlessly reviewing the products of the Real Scientists to make all this work out.

I support this aspiration!! It'll be hot as blazes in 2027 so I would not recommend showing up in the path and winging it. I feel like that will be easier to do in 2028, but I've also never been to that part of the world, so 🤷‍♀️ fwiw weather stats are much better in NW Australia than the Sydney area

Yes! All these kind chauffeur friends are baffled when I have to think really hard to give them driving directions in and out of my neighborhood 😂

As someone who (usually) cycles a lot, old time car wayfinding is not too different from modern day bike route wayfinding. Which IMO is one reason new cyclists struggle. My brain has 3+ versions of reality overlaid depending on transport mode and/or aerial view: walking, biking, driving, transit.

Case in point, I've been asking lots of folks for rides lately (thanks broken heel). I give our address and then I add, our front door faces the alley, look for the Sasquatch mural. Many of them ignore this critical context info and wind up half a block away on a street I can't get to via stairs.

Your brain made a map of car routes based on landmarks and familiar destinations. You had to think about your physical location in the world. Now many drivers only listen to the GPS and don't notice anything about their surroundings, it's dangerous and terrifying.

My kiddo's school had our annual Pizza on the Playground on Friday, and this year we added a Play Street on the School Street! I am still recovering from a broken heel, but I managed to knee scooter there and back to join the fam for Veraci pizza at the best cafe street seats in the neighborhood 🥰

There's the back of a temporary new "stop sign ahead" sign in the foreground.Veraci pizza trailer oven parked on a school playground blacktop churning out hot and fresh pizzas, both by the slice and whole pies, with a small team of dedicated workers. If it were up to me there'd be one for every bus line in all the applicable colors… but given that I've been desperately wanting ANY local plush bus for literally 9+ years, I will take it 🚌 It will be BFFs with my ferry boat tray! (j/k I ordered two and the kids will claim them forever)

Today my spouse drove me into work and I took the bus home. I would like to offer an insufficient and belated thank you to everyone who has ever pushed for ADA as a minimum standard in (most) public spaces and wonder why the F we don't do a better job with accessibility everywhere. Transit rocks.

No, but it is a chance to decide anew what traditions and practices to prioritize, and what to let go of The nice thing about them being little is you can iterate the first couple years before they remember and start expecting the same thing every year forever 😅

Today was the third day in a row I came within a yard of a car hitting me while I was walking in a crosswalk, and today was way too close. I realize we have some drivers out there, but I think we need to ban cars until we can figure out what's going on.

Here to ask the same! Been wanting more info from @amtrakcascades.wsdot.wa.gov about bikes on the new trains but haven't gotten any clear answers. Would radically shift our local travel patterns if it's easy to bring family bikes on board.

When you have optimized your life to bike yourself and your kids everywhere, but you suddenly find yourself with a broken heel, you get to spend an inordinate amount of time asking everyone you have ever met for rides for yourself and family members in their cars AMA

I am definitely pro making it much harder for kids to access e-motos like that. If *only* Aventons or similar were available as e-bikes, that would help, but as you said earlier, show-off-y Class 1-2 e-bikes exist, so this isn't a complete answer.
110
Meredith Rawls @merrdiff.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
If there were dedicated paths for bikes/scooters separate from sidewalks, I think that would remove most conflicts (but easier said than done). Have you been to the new waterfront trail? It's one example of, if there's enough non-car bike/scooter space, riders don't feel compelled to use ped spaces.

Meredith Rawls @merrdiff.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Thanks for thoughtful discussion. One of my big-picture end goals is fewer kids being driven places as default, because it normalizes other modes (+fewer cars improves safety for all), so I don't like that alternative. But the path to get there is not obvious and your safety concerns are valid too.
110
Meredith Rawls @merrdiff.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I wish for a world where streets are car-free and kids CAN just zoom around on e-bikes because there is space, and classes offered just like other activities/sports. E-motos do need to be harder to buy if you don't have a license, but a perfect classification line doesn't fix all of this.
100
Meredith Rawls @merrdiff.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
True, I think the comparison to cars is most helpful for weighing safety concerns. I'm trying to envision what these kids might be doing if these e-bikes didn't exist. Probably not walking or taking the bus to visit a friend. More likely stuck in car-centric neighborhood or being driven somewhere?
100
Meredith Rawls @merrdiff.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
This concern is fair, but I'm struck by a few things 1- same is true for car culture, it's never JUST transportation 2- maybe we need safe off-road places where kids can do this stuff & ALSO get from A to B independently? 3- no matter the antics, it's still safer to others than giving kids car keys

If you're riding an e-scooter and almost injure someone, however, you will be shamed indefinitely, and scooters will be banned so we all have to drive instead
