I applied for secretary jobs because I wanted work that I didn't have to take home with me and was told, "No you'd just leave when you found a job that pays better." Except no job paid better and also the ones I ultimately got had me working a few 16 hour days per week for only $32k.

Honestly if I was a Kid Today I'd skip out on college and focus on learning a trade instead. Not worth it these days. I was lied to about how having an advanced degree would lead to more job opportunities. Yet MOST JOBS TURNED ME DOWN because they didn't want to pay someone with an advanced degree.

The label fell off so I won't actually know which of the pepper varieties I planted until it produces peppers. But it looks like maybe there's one starting? I bought mint and catnip starter plants, too. Things are looking up, and I learned some lessons for next planting season.

Apparently Turk's cap leaves and flowers are edible, so even if I'm not getting berries from mine, I can still throw some greens on my salads. Leaving flowers for the butterflies and hummingbirds, though. I also managed to grow a modest bunch of basil from seed and a massive pepper of some kind.

I get that it's uncomfortable. But there are some situations where we HAVE to confront the uncomfortable. The world's not a cozy farming sim where anyone who mentions real issues is just trying to harsh your good vibes. 24/7 misery is bullshit, of course, but so is never reflecting on the horrors.

I thank my lucky stars daily that I do! And that was only feasible because, at the time, nobody wanted to live in Houston unless they had to 🤣 Now a lot of people have AND want to (for some reason), so prices have shot up.

I'm based in Houston because it was, at the time, one of the only major metropolitan areas where I could afford to live. I could even buy a condo! I didn't do a great job of thinking through WHY it was so affordable to live in. Arts and culture dream, infrastructural and climate change horrorshow.

And I'm one of the LUCKY ones because I live within 10 miles of the refineries. Obscene diesel prices for transportation aren't really factored into what I pay as much as elsewhere in the States.
