Why Democrats Should Stop Using the Phrase “Culture Wars”
Texas’s Gina Hinojosa and others slamming the party for focusing too much on so-called cultural issues are pushing a flawed electoral and policy strategy.

if texas goes the way it seems increasingly possible it might in november, we gotta talk about the political inbreeding that thirty years of single-party rule results in, and how that leaves that party with candidates who are utterly ill-equipped for a real general election

one thing that is worth remember apropos this useful piece is that novel technologies do not necessarily require novel political solutions. americans have had to deal with fast-moving, disruptive technological change in the past, and they did so through collective, democratic action.

How often do we get to see women presidents on screen? And how often are those presidencies more “legitimate”? I looked at 11 political dramas from the last 2 decades to see. Out of 41 presidents on screen, just 13 were women. Of those, only 5 were elected outright (38%), while 64% of men are.

Last week, Allison Janney won an Emmy for her portrayal of President Grace Penn in The Diplomat. Janney’s character offers us a new archetype for female presidents on screen. But (spoiler) she ascends to the Oval like most women on screen do — by accident. meredithconroy.substack.com/p/the-side-d...

bleak but essential read
Navarro told us that she was "shocked to see the growing number of websites in the network and the huge variety of the sites themselves - from cooking and space blogs, to small business and war news." What surprised her the most, though, was how so many of the sites under BBM's umbrella are effectively
"indistinguishable from one another, publishing the same kind of first-person Al-generated stories around self-help topics aimed at people who are lonely."
