i was on a good fitness kick this year but had a back issue flare up at the end of summer. For a few weeks i was in so much pain i couldn’t do much at all, but now the pain is sorta under control. i need to get back into it but my motivation is totally gone. feel like i lost all my fitness gains 😞

i speed ran it because i knew if i thought too hard about the choices i’d never finish it. forced myself to make split second decisions and it still took like 40 minutes. i don’t think my results are perfect but top 13 were pretty accurate

Agree. A lot of the discourse now is revisionist re: the earlier pop albums. TLOAS isn’t my favourite but im not sure there’s a single track where the songcraft (lyrics, song structure & production combined) is meaningfully weaker than, say, Bad Blood or HYGTG, AYHTDWS, etc.

even sonically, pop music is less in-your-face than it was in the 2000s and 2010s (with the exception of hyperpop). broadly, streaming rewards tracks that are inoffensive enough to not be skipped. i think a lot top 40 music sounds less brash & bombastic as a result (again excepting hyperpop)

100%. active choice bonds you to the music in a way passive listening doesn’t. but monoculture really was a thing and it’s absence is noticeable. when i was of a clubbing age, everyone knew the Rihanna & Katy Perry hits, even if they didn’t buy the albums. Streaming changes that in several ways.

but also, i think im an example of current-day listener behaviour that basically proves your point. i know what i like & streaming makes it easy to find more of it. for exploration, i can get recs from niche music communities online. i can’t remember the last time i listened to a radio station.

the streaming economy is a factor for sure. algorithmic feeds reward more regular releases and probably discourage artists from taking longer breaks to creatively reset. that said, artists with long careers putting out some real duds was very much happening in earlier phases of capitalism.

Yeah i agree. The talky bridge on Patient Zero doesn’t really fit the song imo (and it’s something she’s done better on previous songs). “Overly wordy bridge” is definitely a Taylor thing and you either love it or you don’t. But i feel the recent attempts don’t match the zeal of (1/2)

undoubtedly true. i was thinking about this re: the showgirl hate. detractors insist it’s the worst thing she’s ever released, but there’s no way it’s actually objectively that different in quality compared to Lover or reputation (or even 1989 honestly). Like… Wood is not cornier than ME!

Yeah, i quite like all of those songs too! the only one i actively dislike is Cancelled (Eldest Daughter could’ve had better lyrics but i still like the melody and the verses.) the album still ends up in the bottom half of my ranking and i don’t think the Encore songs change that.

“okay” is kinda where i’m at too. none of em stand out to me. Showgirl didn’t end up being a favourite album for me, but i’m seeing a lot of people describe these 4 tracks as better than TLOAS and that seems like a stretch to me.

A fundamental problem with "oh it's useful for coding" is that "generating more software faster" has, if anything, negative marginal utility in itself. The world is not suffering from a software shortage. The world is suffering from a software quality crisis, which LLMs seem more likely to worsen.
