You may also hear it called "ゴーミー" if won by Tsumo, which sounds like the word for "trash", which is just like how I feel winning nomi hands :3

Mahjong is the main vehicle of my political praxis btw. How & where you play the game says a lot. Especially if you teach or otherwise facilitate in-person gameplay.

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 13/07/2026

Might sound like a total corpo here, but I'm genuinely motivated to do more stuff at work for the first time in my life. Helps that the company I work for pays and treats us well. I wouldn't be willing to do half as much as I do if I didn't believe the company wants me to succeed and move up.

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 11/07/2026

oh yeah and it seems like I'm about to get a raise for the second time since I started less than a year ago, so there's that too!

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 11/07/2026

Been v stressed about things so here's some things that are going well for me - I have an awesome job and the company I work for is awesome - I'm about to move in with my gf!!! - I've already planned more mahjong tourney travel this year for me and my club members!

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026

Yes! Especially newer books lately have been getting both English and Japanese official releases!

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 29/06/2026

Literally just a couple weeks after rebranding my club, it now shows up all over Google and even the AI result! Time to keep grinding

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

I also play competitively and have a lot of resources for getting better at the game, feel free to hmu

Melody 🀄 @melodeezz.bsky.social · 28/06/2026

There's lots of Riichi here, but most of the community happens on Discord/Twitter online from my experience. But if you look for the mahjong people out there you'll find them! The ARA dwebsite (USA) and jellicode's website (international) also have maps of where you can find your local IRL club!

Oomfies and mahjong friends I promise I don't hate you I just have been very busy in my real-life parts of my life and haven't had much time for anything (even mahjong sadly). I'll be back to chronically online mode soon enough lol

mahjong tournament action shots with the dora indicator in front of you >>>>>>>

Action shot of me looking at a hand I just drew at a Riichi Mahjong tournament. Hands holding the tiles on both ends of the hand, and the dora indicator showing the Shaa (West) tile. I'm wearing a white shirt and a few wristbands.

a lot of things did. mostly the tiles. but also playing around danger, going for consistent value, and exploitative play (picking up on and taking advantage of other players' habits)

something changed fundamentally about how I play mahjong over the course of last weekend. And I think it's good... we'll have to see.

Had a lot of fun, played my heart out, and even kicked some ass at the mahjong tables in Vegas this weekend!
