APSR abstract for "Precolonial Elites and Colonial Redistribution of Political Power," by Allison S. Hartnett and Mohamed Saleh, Studying British-occupied Egypt, the authors show colonial rule shifted power within precolonial institutions toward elites most congruent with colonizer interests, especially in cotton-producing provinces.
