OpenAI’s latest release of mathematical results gives us a glimpse of what AI acceleration looks like. Whatever the task or field, if there is enough data or if reliable data can be synthetically generated, AI will come for it. Nothing is truly AI-proof.

I think AGI is within reach if all compute and data can be combined. One for all, all for one style. Strong open weight models are now emerging from the US and Europe, in addition to China. This gives firms and individuals more ways to extract value from their own data.

It’s possible that human intelligence is maximally stable thanks to evolution. Even then, maintaining that stability isn’t easy. Humans developed spiritual and philosophical systems to stay sane, and even so, things sometimes run out of control

📣 Major provable reduction towards solving chess by an estimated factor of 10^15! It turns out that the threefold repetition rule does not change chess’s game-theoretic value: if either side can force a win, they can do so without ever repeating the same position.

Mind boggling. Claude produced the first computer-checked proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, writing. 13 million lines of Lean code proved 29,500 intermediate theorems in 11 days 🤯 this is several times larger than the existing math library! github.com/anthropics/f...

The Proof Boom is real! A non-professional mathematician at Anthropic posts a claimed solution via Claude, with a Lean formalization, to a problem. Just a few days ago, a Fields medallist described it as the most important conjecture in our field and said could be cracked soon.

Apparently, rapid chess was called “active chess” back in 1987. Kasparov, who was World Champion at the time, obviously didn’t like the name, as that would make him the “passive chess” World Champion. Chess history is fascinating. www.forbes.com/sites/beaudu...

🚨Elsevier forces out Games and Economic Behavior (GEB) Editor, entire editorial board has resigned, current board only handling new submissions until Nov. 14 #econsky
    Dear Advisory Editor of GEB
We are very sorry to be the bearers of bad news for GEB.
I learned from Elsevier on Wednesday July 28 that, contrary to my expressed willingness to continue, my 3-year contract will not be renewed.
"Moving towards a closer alignment with Elsevier strategic priorities and publishing policies" was offered as the motive for this decision. Requests for explanations, first by me, then in a collective letter by the other six Editors, were dismissed by Elsevier which simply reaffirmed its legal power to make such decisions.
Elsevier then started precipitously its own search for new Editors without input of the Editorial Board.
By Friday August 14 all seven Editors have sent their resignation, requiring a 3-month advance notice.
Therefore, we will continue to manage as before the papers currently under review and the new submissions until Saturday November 14. After this date we will only complete the evaluation of papers still waiting an editorial decision.
