This #LaborDay, honor teenage girls who made a change 7/? 16 y/o Lily Kempson was arrested for striking unfair work conditions at her factory job in Dublin By 19 she was an armed member of the Easter Rebellion uprising. She fled to the US to avoid arrest and later received a medal. #IrishHistory

This #LaborDay we honor teenage girls who made a change 5/? In 1917 teen girls in textile factories, the largest industry in SãoPaulo, went on strike protesting 11hr shifts, abuse, and low wages. The strike grew into the first general strike in Brazil's history with 70k protestors that changed laws

This #LaborDay we honor teenage girls who made a change 4/? The Amamiya Silk Mill Girls, mostly children and teens, led the first modern strike in Japan. Protesting abysmal work conditions for dismal wages, the group became "the starting point for Japan's labor movement" #WomeninHistory #Japan

This #LaborDay we honor teenage girls who made a change: 3/? Mary Driscoll, 14, co-led the Matchgirls Strike protesting work conditions causing cancer and "phossy jaw". Mary convinced the workers, including her mom and sister, to form a union. The strike caught national attention and changed laws.

This #LaborDay we honor teenage girls who made a change: 2/? Rose Freedman, 18, survived the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire by climbing onto a neighboring roof. 146 workers perished in 30 mins. She rejected bribes from bosses for her silence and spoke out about illegal conditions.

When 17y/o Belle Boyd killed a Union soldier, she wasn't sorry; he was accosting her mother. Instead, she learned how to dodge the law and spy for the #Confederacy in the #CivilWar. Belle was was arrested 6x, jailed 3x, and exiled 2x but lived to tell the tale. Read her story: tinyurl.com/bde9kbdr

On this day in 1891, Ellen Martin went to the polls in Lombard, IL & demanded to vote. Martin noted that the town’s charter did not explicitly limit voting in town elections to men. The election judges reluctantly agreed with Martin, who reportedly became the 1st woman to vote in Illinois. #WeTheMen

In 1631, 17 y/o Princess Jahanara's mother died. Grieving, her father gave her interim rule of the Mughal Empire. She ruled until 1666 and her compassion, leadership, and diplomacy made her one of India's most beloved rulers. For her mother, her father built India's iconic Taj Mahal. #WomensDay2026

In 1893, 16 y/o Tessie Reynolds scandalized Victorian society by cycling from Brighton to London wearing pantaloons instead of a skirt. Globally publicized, Tessie's ride was a milestone for women's rights and sports. She was a great athlete, as today the ride takes ~11 hrs. #WomeninSports #kidlit

In 1586, 17 y/o Tachibana Ginchiyo armed castle maids with matchlock guns. Head of her clan, she was a fierce onna-musha (female samurai) and formed Japan's first all-female bodyguard team. Her maids and warriors defended their castle and her forces later helped unify Japan. #WHD bitt.ly/ew1Tte

In 1664, 16 y/o Juana Inés posed as a boy to sneak into university. Her plot failed, but she was invited to debate a jury of local scholars. She impressed them all, received several offers of marriage, refused each one, became a nun, and was a major contributor to the Spanish Golden Age. #WHD

18 y/o Vinnie Ream was Lincoln's personal sculptor. Like him, she'd grown up in a frontier log cabin and "when he learned that I was poor, he granted me the sittings." To celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth, each day I'm sharing a story from my book on #RemarkableYoungWomen Maria Mitchell observed her first solar eclipse when she was 12. By the time she was 14, she was making calculation tables for sailors in Nantucket to navigate using the stars.

Later, Maria became the first American to discover a new comet, C/1847 T1, dubbed “Miss Mitchell’s Comet”. The next year she became the first woman in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. #WomensHistory #Herstory #WomenInHistory
