Finally getting round to reading @lewisbaston.bsky.social appropriately on a trip to Vienna & Bratislava. Made a good start on the train and plenty of time before the flight.

Here's a #HigherEducationPostcard of Trinity College Cambridge, when part of it was being used as a hospital in World War 1 If you like this image, I’d really appreciate a repost – it helps to spread the word!
An old monochrome picture postcard showing a hospital ward with nurses and porters, but as yet no beds or patients

“I don’t need recommendations on why I should not ask the regime for a pardon. A sense of dignity is enough.” It was an answer of Mzia Amaghlobeli to yesterday’s briefing of GD Parliament Speaker where he once again spread false information about Mzia 2/1 scourse: @netgazeti.org

According to Merlin, the birds (I can’t actually see) screeching at each other are jays. Such beautiful birds which I don’t often see but it’s clear one has really upset another one.

Back in the day you could rely on an English summer to give you days like this. Now it involves going to the North Atlantic.

The last time I travelled to see a total eclipse it was in the morning. By lunch time we could relax having seen an amazing sight. Currently trying a pre-eclipse rest as still 2 hours until first contact and 3 to totality. Nervous time 😬

Been good to see programmes about Geoff Hamilton. It was shock when he died aged just 60, thirty years ago. I loved his gardening programmes. A gardener for the ordinary person. My favourite was the ornamental kitchen garden. Still have the book, still grow the veg. Ate our runner beans today.

After several hours parading around Ripon, St. Wilfrid’s procession made it to the cathedral. Lots of brilliant floats and of course St Wilfrid himself.

I know it’s more interesting to talk about who’s getting what in cabinet, but if the new government wants to do better, understanding what current ministers have been doing and struggling with would be a good start. It’s what new leaders usually do. I fear another period of not much changing.

I feel like Rip Van Winkle - went away on 23rd for work and everything has changed by more than a week. Garden grown, flowers bloomed and faded, pond disappeared, tomato seeds germinated and grown 3 inches and why are people wearing so few clothes?

On this Women’s International day, just wanted to remind you about King Tamar of Georgia (not queen) back from 12th century. According to sources she was titled as “King of Kings”. Tamar’s reign was one of the prosperous eras for Georgia.

I think the best local government leader in the north is Steve Houghton in Barnsley. Without the advantages that Manchester has, he has made a phenomenal difference over the last 30 years. I think he would have more to offer than Andy Burnham. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Honoured to chair a commemoration event in the House of Commons today marking the Halabja massacre, where thousands of Kurds were killed in a chemical weapons attack by Saddam Hussein’s regime in 1988. I visited Halabja in 2013, and I wrote that we must move from ‘never again’ to ‘always protect.’

This afternoon I attended an event to commemorate 37 years since Halabja and the genocide of Kurds. Hearing the testimony of survivors aged only 11 at the time was incredibly moving and important. The challenge of “never again” is still there. Remembering is a vital first step.

This large window dominates the library landing of Ripon Cathedral. It depicts Ruth and Naomi within an elaborate gold, shield-like frame, like a wall memorial but in glass. It’s from 1957 and seems on a cusp, being neither wholly traditional nor modern in style. #AdventWindows Day 10.
