yes - we’ve seen it there twice. Really good interpretation and plenty of time to look at it.

???? We used to make piles of sandwiches when away on camp as kids and of course both slices were buttered (or rather margerined). If you don’t like butter don’t use it but never heard of people only buttering one slice 😳

I was telling an 18 year old yesterday about a cycling holiday I took in my early twenties as I had little money. He asked if I listened to an Ipod, then changed it to Walkman when he saw my face. I had to explain it was even 4 years before I bought a Walkman. Felt ancient…

I was on the committee of Care Bill 2014. The debate is instructive - free care would inevitably come with eligibility criteria, low level services that support existing carers get squeezed out. Situations get worse, people end up in hospital etc www.theyworkforyou.com/pbc/2013-14/...

people don’t become exhausted caring. Also integrated health and social care services at local level to problem solve alongside families so getting people out of hospital sooner. (We ran such a team back in the early 90s). Yes, some people will need longer term care are but not most.

Meg Munn @megmunn01.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes absolutely. There needs to be much more funding to local organisations to support the care that is already provided free by family and friends with flexible responses. Also local advice services to help people find out what is available when they first need support. Early intervention so 1/2

and the state stepping in, in a minority of situations where people need residential / nursing care over a long period. 2/2

Indeed and I have ideological objections. Most care isn’t delivered by the state, it’s families, friends and neighbours literally caring for each other. I don’t want it to be the state’s responsibility. I want more local organisations to support carers so they can care for longer 1/2

Where were they from? We booked twin rooms in S Africa and St Helena and both times they were twin beds pushed together. Lost in translation!

Fond memories of Harold Wilson’s white heat of technology speech - not at the time of course, I was only 4 but references to it later.

Just been enjoying the section on Alsace. I spent a year in Strasbourg as a student. The professor who taught us Alsacienne was one of the deserters from the Wehrmacht, ditched his uniform and spoke only French. A French friend’s subsequent job was paying priests. Your book explained that at last!

They are in a position to try and make changes but it takes lots of time and effort. It means asking questions in parliament, pressing ministers for meetings, holding debates etc MPs are doing this all the time but achieving change is not a given. It is very much part of the job

In my experience it’s not usually the same member of staff who does casework and writes speeches - different skills
000
Meg Munn @megmunn01.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
But casework feeds into speaking in parliament, also tells MPs what constituents care about. Plus MPs have funding for caseworkers. Bigger pressure is campaigns. Emails made it easier to contact MPs. Can do so at the press of a computer key.

“Legislative expert” “committee expert” - or pursue ministerial office or shadow ministerial role. Donald Searing wrote about these different political roles. And subject areas - can’t know about everything, become an expert in a few. Be known for your subject. Lots of choices to be made. 2/2

Meg Munn @megmunn01.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Having done the role for fourteen years I could say lots. A key issue is getting re-elected - hence responding to casework is important. Also being active in your constituency (when not a safe one - most constituencies now). Then it’s important to choose - “good constituency MP” 1/2

Here's a #HigherEducationPostcard of Trinity College Cambridge, when part of it was being used as a hospital in World War 1 If you like this image, I’d really appreciate a repost – it helps to spread the word!
An old monochrome picture postcard showing a hospital ward with nurses and porters, but as yet no beds or patients

My goodness, was that a great policy. Got kids to stay on and because they had to attend lessons to get the money they did better academically than previous cohorts. And because they had to attend, other kids not getting the money were also more likely to attend and they did better too. Fewer NEETS

I think it’s a failure to consider the welfare of the child. If parents aren’t providing proper protection for children, it’s a welfare issue. Labour in the late 90s brought in child curfew orders for children under 10. No LA applied for one - safeguarding was the appropriate response.

Another day and it’s still going on - anyone noticed this is mainly London centric? Growing up in Sheffield we were impressed by any adult on a bike. How my brother managed Derbyshire Lane I don’t know. I did once cycle to a party in Derby because I was unemployed and broke.

I know it’s a significant cost but I wish they would at least set out the vision for re-introducing SureStart in “deprived” areas. The benefits to children in terms of achievement are proven with better results at 16 (and better baseline at 5).
