Just renewed my @bibsocamer.bsky.social membership! I hope you'll renew yours too, or join the BSA. I can't imagine where my career would be today without the research funding, mentorship, and scholarship I've received through BSA membership the past 10+ years. secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/...

Some clarification from an academic friend: each institution's programs will have to conduct an evaluation of their majors from the list and their earning potential several years post-graduation. Results will impact eligibility. Smaller institutions might not meet threshold for evaluation.

Your ask for a Native American Heritage Month speaker/event should include the exact date/time, and the pay. And there should be pay. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

I do not understand trench/rain coats without hoods. The entire premise is *it’s raining*! Why would I want my head getting wet?!

Yes! All week I’ve been annoyed at this headline and you’ve perfectly articulated why it’s so infuriating.

"Meet students where they are" should include universities *HAVING TEXTBOOK STORES ON CAMPUS*, not asking faculty to rely only on eTexts (not feasible for all disciplines), or violate federal copyright law by making copies of entire textbooks for students.

Megan Peiser @meganpeiser.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
This happens *every year*. eCampus is not feasible if are using quality textbooks that aren't always available for 2-day Amazon shipping. A student culture that expects everything to arrive in 2 days adds to the instability of this system. They don't order until the first day of classes.

Access to textbooks continues to be a major hurtle for my Jane Austen Class. Our campus does not have a textbook store. We have a "merch" store & then contract the third party eCampus, which purchases ZERO texbooks to stock, rather just middle-man orders them for students frm publishers on demand.

The chapters: Miss Bingley tries to bait Darcy into conversation, Darcy tries to avoid Elizabeth (+ his feelings), Mr Collins arrives etc., Wickham is introduced, Wickham and Darcy have an awkward street-scene, Wickham gives his backstory.

Today my Jane Austen class read this Defector piece, Close Reading is for Everyone, and some chapters of Pride & Prejudice where not much happens, but rather we are invited to observe how the characters act/react to one another. defector.com/close-readin...

Pretty thrilled that across my Jane Austen classes this term I have students called Emma, Lizzy, and Lydia. We are woefully short of heroes though. Nary an Edmund, Frederick, or Fitzwilliam in sight.

I've always wondered about this! Is Jane just down for this? Is this an agreed upon childcare trade from the Gardiners caring for the Bennet brood in the previous decade? How is Mrs. Bennet not screaming about how unfair it is to have these boys underfoot?

A constant teaching obstacle at my institution is textbooks. There is no physical textbook store, just a third party middle-man that only orders the students' books when they submit an order the first week of classes. Nobody's books will be here until week 3 of term. Student Success?

Making copies of Jane Austen at 250: Reading for Pleasure syllabus, more affectionately known as Analog Austen. I taught this class last Fall w great success & resounding cheer frm the students. They loved going analog. They loved reading physical books & writing by hand. They loved our community.

I'm exhausted by reading the latest hot take on AI. Lately I've been channeling energy twd reading amazing scholarship by my colleagues & it is so much more enriching. AI is still out there destroying critical thinking & the planet, but my colleagues in #18thCentury studies are publishing bangers.

Another day in the weeds with early 19th century periodicals. Bonus: catching a publication attribution error that one journal made, which was re-quoted/reprinted for about 80 years.

We are going analog in other places too. Our family is stopping in the public library 2x/wk for books. Spending our money at the local record shop. I'm thisclose to canceling the You Must Have 10 Different Streaming Services madness & going back to DVDs. I've started paying for groceries in cash.

Our workplaces are overwhelmed with AI ads, programs pushing AI on us—"use it in your class!" funds for incorporating AI, but no funds for any other work. Funds for union-busting, but not for research. Not for a fridge for the work room. Not for the hole in the classroom ceiling.

Being online in any/all ways is just crushing now. When I open social media/Google, I get ads trying to sell me things based on my grief, on common illnesses for my dog's breed, on the assumption that I must hate my body. A constant bombardment reminding me of sadness—all for someone else's profit.

I like: Zotero for citations (editable, browser+ MS Word plugins); Tropy for organizing archive photos; Scrivener for drafting (Zotero plugin is a bit clunky, but I just do full citations in later drafts & use shorthand); Toggl for tracking my labor across multiple projects; ToDoist for to do list
