I feel bad for the person at Remedy who didn't realise that pushing a patch before pre-loads were decrypted would cause the whole 90+GB package to need to be re-downloaded by every purchaser. Very human mistake that you'd think Valve would have safeguards around.

Why was Cregger’s Resident Evil so… funny? I enjoyed it but the humour in the games comes more from playing the B-grade action movie schlock straight. This was straight up slapstick at times.

Was incredibly disappointed to see a certain OSS game project use genAI to reverse engineer binary file formats. That's not just a valuable set of skills, it's also destructive in the same way those slop recompilations are. No human involved gained the full knowledge to share w/ others.

Haha, nvidia put out a puff-piece video on DLSS5 talking about how it's using all these different render buffers to assure a good result. Turns out it's only as a training step (for some kind of per-game LORA?). The actual real-time render only has the colour buffer and motion vectors as input 🤡

I did a little internal interview at work today and it reminded me that @openra.net is about to turn 20 soon. We started the first work on it towards the end of 2006. I haven’t been involved in 15 years but my old friend Paul is still holding down the fort. Shout out to the team keeping it alive.

I grow increasingly suspicious that there's a concerted effort to manipulate public perception of programmers. There's increasingly this narrative that we're all using LLMs even if we're not "vibe coding" and seeing significant productivity gains from them. Not my experience at all.

Oh boy, I almost screamed "yes" out loud in the office reading this. There's a persistent belief in the lack of craft in games programming, and that has even been internalised by a lot of game programmers. I'm so vocally stubborn about not being a "wedge" that it's causing friction.

Yesterday’s layoffs at Bethesda Games Studios were not a cut of “14 layers of management”. We lost dozens of programmers, artists, designers and testers. Many of whom worked at BGS for decades.
