I've written how my stay in Canada resulted in an urge to make a documentary on the disgraceful treatment of Indigenous people there that had shocked me so much, including highlighting the horrors of colonialism. Sadly, it was not to be, but the Indigenous voices are speaking out and we must listen.

"The purpose of getting power is to be able to give it away." - Aneurin Bevan. Today's Labour Party chiefs tilt their heads at that in confusion. They would assume it could only mean continuing austerity and financially abandoning councils, calling it "local power" when they really mean local blame.

Sure Start centres. Planting trees. Bloody hell. The inheritors of Mandelson's Labour Party, post-purge, clutching at straws, announcing policies hatched from focus groups, largely cynically picked to woo voters as though they're customers rather than citizens...because they have no core values.

Burnham, as expected, fuelling far-right narratives instead of addressing them He knows painting these as "legitimate concerns" will only embolden and legitimise them He knows they are minoritarian but he makes them "the people" He's comfortable for the rest of us can suffer the consequences
Burnham says concerns of women in Piddington about camp for asylum seekers 'understandable'

Q: What would you say to the women of Piddington concerned about having a camp for asylum seeker near their village, or women in other villages with similar concerns?

Burnham replied:

Those concerns are understandable and they have to be addressed in whatever solution is finally agreed.

There were also concerns expressed about the use of hotels and the reason why the nature of accommodation is changing across the country is because a commitment was given to end the use of hotels, and that was what many people were calling for a few years ago.
Burnham says he will be 'relentless' in dealing with small boats, but sidesteps offshore processing question

Q: Would you consider more radical policies, such as sending asylum seekers to a country like Albania to have their claims processed there?

Burnham avoided the question, but stressed there was some evidence that “things are going in the right direction.”

He said he would be “relentless” in addressing this issue.

And he praised what Shabama Mahmood, the home secretary, is doing on this.

She’s got a strong grip on this issue. What we have been doing is working, but more is needed and more will be done.
