Right now, in Northern Ireland, too many families are left without support when their child comes out. It can feel isolating, confusing, or even overwhelming, and that’s not fair on parents or on our young people.

That’s why we’re starting something new: NEST

A peer-led network of parents who understand, who care, and who are ready to walk this road together.

From Foyle to the Causeway Coast, through Ballymena, Mid & East Antrim, Newtownabbey, and Carrickfergus – NEST will bring parents together for local meet-ups, cups of tea, honest chats, and solidarity.

If you’re a parent or carer and want to be part of this new community, drop us an email, and we’ll get you linked in.

Ballymena now has an up & running LGBTQ+ youth group that I’ll be working with. We’re going on a trip tomorrow to Dundalk, and I just think it’s so bloody brilliant to have these local services to support young people. This is the legacy I wanted @meapride.bsky.social to create. 🫶🏻

Marching in Ballymena today with @queergreensni.bsky.social for @meapride.bsky.social 🏳‍🌈 In Budapest, the government tried to ban Pride and block it with neo-nazis. In Ballymena, bigots spread slurry on the parade route and shouted bible verses at marchers. At both, Pride persisted, unbroken 💚

Any followers on here I have that are from the rest of the UK, put pressure on your local pride organisers to implement bans on political parties from participating in pride events (Labour & Tory alike) whether it’s our trans siblings or the disabled their attacks need to be held to account.

Solidarity to all local Prides in their stance against Political Parties supporting a Puberty Blocker Ban

Unite Regional LGBT+ Committee statement on political parties participating in pride

Unite has a long history of standing beside those who are most vulnerable to discrimination. Our union also has a strong history of holding politicians to account and challenging any failures to legislate to protect the most vulnerable in our society.

In line with these principles we are proud to stand alongside the call for uninviting all political parties, who have supported and enacted the puberty blocker ban for trans people, from participating in Prides.

Unite has proudly participated in Prides to show our support for LGBTQIA+ rights, and we actively campaign for those rights.

Pride is a protest, and those who fail to support the protest have no right to be there.

Pride is a call for action, and those who are in positions of power must use that power to act for everyone in the LGBTQIA+ communities.

Unite’s policy is to support non-commercial, community-based Prides who focus on the rights and needs of everyone who is part of the LGBTQIA+ communities. Unite will be following our policy when deciding which local Prides to support and participate in.

On Tuesday I’ll be heading up to Stormont for the first time ever (that’ll be a bit of a pinch me moment) I’ll be meeting with the deputy leader of the Alliance Party, representing the local LGBTQ+ community from MEA and bringing my concerns to the table.

Remember how it started; it started with a black trans woman who was a sex worker alongside others who fought for change This is a phenomenal theme, pride is not just a celebration but a protest to highlight the inequalities which still exist to this day. The fight for rights is intersectional.
