They are collecting soil samples. That area is dredged fill from the Potomac in the 1880’s. It has terrible bearing capacity. The Arch, if built, will need massive pile foundations to support that weight.

Actually this is good news. Based on the current floor plans there is no where to store this stuff. Also, the current design is not designed for blast. The soils in that location have no bearing capacity. This extra loading means the foundations will have to be redesigned or it will sink. Delay!

The Kennedy Center is hardly in a state of neglect. In the past 20 yrs there have been the following major renovations: The Family Theater (‘05), the Opera House (‘05), the Eisenhower Theater (‘08) and, the Terrace Theater (‘17). The expansion was built in 2019.

The KC has been renovated numerous times in the past 20yrs. Including the Family Theater (‘05), Opera House (‘05), Eisenhower (‘08), and Terrace Theater (‘17). The expansion was built in 2019. The A Level lobbies and the box offices were also renovated in the past 20yrs. Hardly a case of neglect.

Congressman- As an architect that works in DC, I can clearly see that those plans have not been vetted by DHS for threat level. And those plans are not designed for blast. Not only is that arch a monstrosity, it will be a vulnerable target.

Also-that land is reclaimed soil dredged from the Potomac in the 1880’s. It has zero bearing capacity and the foundations needed for a structure that tall would need to be significant. Both Lincoln & Jefferson Memorials have deep foundations. The Tidal Basin was just rebuilt because it was sinking.
