At least we didn't all lose our minds and inflict ten years of the Tories on ourselves in order to eventually try and sneak a watered down version of the 2019 Labour manifesto back in and hope nobody notices and asks awkward questions.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

A suggested statement for Andy Burnham.
‘The British public decided in the 1930s that they would not tolerate black-shirted militias marching through their streets. They would cherish robust political argument; they would not accept thuggery and intimidation. When Oswald Mosley led his Blackshirts to Cable Street, local people turned them back. A new law – introduced by a Liberal, backed by Labour and carried by a Conservative majority – banned private militias, political uniforms and ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting any political object’. The British people are as determined today as in the 1930s that they will not accept the methods of Mussolini and the Munich Beer Hall. This government will uphold the law and defend the traditions of British democracy’.

I've always been told that pronouncing things incorrectly (but confidently) is a sign that people have read more than they've consumed from TV/audio. Mad thing to judge people for.

I really like both series. The Dublin Trilogy are humour inflected crime (ish). Stranger Times is set in a newspaper reporting on the paranormal based in Hulme. Both feature a significant number of nods to and characters named after Manchester comics

Even at the subsidised level they are still taking huge amounts of money

DaVe @mckjerral.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Yep, very unclear how much. As an overall business state their revenue is a fraction of their expenditure, but a lot of that is the cost of development of new models. Obviously still a cost that needs to be accounted for but not clear how subsidised the actual usage is.

It's sucking up a lot of other money too, both through being 4/5 companies charging basically every company in the world, and normal mega investment vehicles. If it goes pop then lots of things will be fucked purely financially

The same applies for those desperate for an AI "utopia" (which isn't coming from LLMs), when you've automated all the jobs and made everyone redundant who is going to buy all your shit. It can't possibly work in any long term. It's all short termist leeches bleeding the world dry, for what?

Not that the rest is going to be plain sailing, but I don't understand how this can't be late stage capitalism. One person has as much wealth as almost half the world's population combined. Quantitative easing aside it is a zero sum game. Wealth isn't created, it's taken.

Yeah the problem with that is the projection of western maps. Africa is much much bigger than Europe. Europe may be a bit cramped in this projection, but Africa is massively shrunk in Mercator and most Western maps

Hard to overstate the consternation, and indeed anger, around this. Brian Cox: "These devastating and irreversible cuts are a legacy from a series of hasty and ill-considered decisions taken by UKRI, overseen by a government department that no longer exists."

Little known to many, on the 10th June, the government released the interim report on ADHD and neurodiversity services in the UK. It came out to very little fanfare. Why? Because it doesn't match the government & the press narrative on "an epidemic of neurodiversity diagnoses".

Companies can have both criminal and civil liability. Not saying it will play out easily, but the framework is there. No different from someone being injured by a faulty product or building.

I would REALLY like to see the cat road collisions petition actually get somewhere this time. Two weeks left to get it over the 100k line so ministers can't just shrug and go "nah that's just for dogs" as they have previously. Please sign and share:

Petition: Legislate to require drivers to report collisions with cats
It is legal in the UK to hit a cat when driving and not need to stop or report collisions, leaving them scared, alone, and in pain. Cats are important, loved, valued family members for many and we believe the law should reflect this.

Matthew Lillard criticized the industry for prioritizing celebrities over voice actors in animation: “The ability to carry a film, as the lead of a film with only a voice, is a power very few people have. The idea that they keep hiring crappy celebrities to carry huge films is killing us.”
