I'm still writing code the hard way. I'm slow. I like to think critically about every line of code and fiddle with variable names until everything looks right. I treat code as a liability and try to ship only what's necessary. It's hard to imagine writing code any other way.

I don't buy the AI narrative around prosperity for all. There is plenty of money to go around yet it tends to flow to the top. I can't imagine a world where those in control of AI, assuming it actually works, will resist charging an ever increasing subscription fee cementing the haves and have nots.

So Canada promises to do a bunch of stuff it was mostly already doing. And despite raging and screaming for months about the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, Trump gets NO concessions on trade. Nothing. Just theater. Very stupid and expensive theater that damaged US relations with a key ally.

Architects, Anti-Patterns, and Organizational Fuckery

I recently wrote a twitter thread on the proper role of architects, or as I put it, tongue-in-cheek-ily, whether or not architect is a “bullshit role”. It got a LOT of reactions (2.5 we…

Your regularly scheduled reminder that any result you get from AI will always be a guess. If you *can* calculate or compute the answer, you probably should; it will be faster, cheaper, and far more accurate. But some problems you *can't* really calculate or compute -- in which case, guess away.

It has snowed in Chicago and YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS! Time to remind everyone that we light our train tracks on fire to prevent the switches from freezing.
